Introduction

This course is suitable for those seeking to develop their skills and knowledge in Applied Psychology and Social Sciences with opportunity for progression onto university degree courses or employment.

This one or two year course provides students with a flexible learning plan where all students study the same subject in the first academic year and then have the option to continue their study in the second year within a small number of science or social science disciplines. 

This course is an excellent choice for students interested in psychology with additional interests in criminology, health and wellbeing

Students will gain qualifications in the first year to equal 1.5 A'levels and Core Maths.

One of the great benefits of studying with West Suffolk College is the highly trained professional team of staff all of whom have industry experiences that they share with the learners and support their development. 

An additional  valuable component within the course structure is the  work placement that is undertaken of 100 hours each year. Work placement is organised by the work placement team.

It is a full time course. You attend college three days per week and additionally one day is out in placement throughout the college year. 

This offers the opportunity to work in a variety of settings, including educational psychology, protective services, crime and reform services, psychology and counselling. 

Entry requirements

The minimum requirement is 5 GCSEs at Grades 9 -5 or equivalent to include Maths and English.

In addition all students must:

  • Have an interview with a member of the course team

Qualifications

The first year of the course has the following qualficaitons: 

a BTEC Level 3 certificate in Applied Psychology , extended certificate in criminology and certificate in Health and Social Care and Core Maths.

The second year of the course includes the extended diploma in applied psychology, diploma in criminology and extended certificate in health and social care.

This course will prepare you for long term employment within a wide number of Public Sector roles, including Health and Security sectors. 

The practical experience of the work placements additionally support students with professional and work skills

The main qualification is 50% external and 50% internal examination

Placements are offered across the region, organised by our dedicated placement team.

Where will the course take me?

This course offers students the opportunity to progress into a wide number of apprenticeship and university courses, including Mental Health Nursing, working in community, housing and protective services as well as health and well being practices. 

Will I need any materials or equipment?

There is a course book available to purchase, or there are a limited number available in the library

Furthermore, students will need to have their own college stationery for classes - paper, pens, a folder etc.
