Welcome to the Department of Health and Social Sciences, the place to find your strengths. My name is Naomi Meara, and I am the Head of Department. 

If you have your heart set on working with others in a health or care setting, working with people in need or want to develop your understanding of human behaviour of programmes will meet your expectations. 

We can help you take that next step towards a rewarding career in a large diverse and rewarding sector which offers you a job for life; even if you are not sure of the exact step, we can provide the steppingstones to help you find the best next step. 

Our programmes are designed to provide you with progression opportunities with a broad suite of health, care, and human behaviour studies. Leading students to degrees, apprenticeships, and full-time employment. 

A strong and diverse staff team from a variety of Health and Social Sciences professions provide you a strong foundation to explore your own academic and vocational journey enabling you to grow and progress as a person. Learning through a mixture of practical and theoretical elements that help you to gain practical skills as well as the theory that supports your preparation for assessments. 

Our department is developing the future paramedics, nurses, cardiologist, care workers, activity and wellbeing coordinators, psychologists, anthropologists, counsellors, social workers, youth workers and many other careers in this diverse and supportive sector.

  • We have excellent links with local sector specialists to provide you with meaningful work placement and a dedicated work placement officer who will support you to develop your skills prior to going into placement.These include: West Suffolk Hospital, Addenbrookes Hospital, East of England Ambulance Services, One Life Suffolk, Future Life, The Mix Stowmarket, St Nicolas Hospice, Riverwalk School, and many more regional specialists. This diversity of placement provides you with a good fit for your personal development and career interests.
  • The programmes give you opportunities to gain understanding of the diversity of employment opportunities within the sector with visiting speakers and career events, enabling you to learn about careers that may be new to you, the staff are also from a broad career background, including public health, nursing, social work, wellbeing, physiotherapy, midwifery, and family support, which supports students to gain varied career advice. 
  • The department also has excellent links with charitable foundations and care homes that enhance their learning experiences through project work. 
  • Additionally, students can develop their work ready skills through additional training and qualifications including Safeguarding and first aid qualifications. Careers events, Public Health Conference, as well as immersive experiences such as operating theatre live.

Courses

The suite provides a range of different subject that meet students interests and career aspirations to work within Health, Social and Community settings. The variety of courses are designed to support students who are interested in specific aspects of the sector.  

Students can start at a level relating to their prior achievement at school or previous college course. 

Level 1 Care - Adult and Children

  • The level 1 Care- Adult and children is a foundation to learning programme which aims to build up the soft and personable skills of our young people, as well a focus on academic skills including Math and English.

  • The course runs over three days a week (Math and English is included in this time) and students will participate in an array of projects, both academic and community based. Projects vary from working with children, adults and developing core workplace skills.

  • The Foundation team are incredibly passionate about young people, their skills - both soft and academic, but also the well-being and mental health support that many of our young people so desperately need.

  • The philosophy of the Foundation Provision is to allow young people to be who they are, to build on their skills, and to achieve their goals.

Level 2 Intermediate programme NCFE Health and Social Care  

  • The Level 2 Intermediate programme NCFE Health and Social Care aims to develop foundation knowledge and understanding of the health and social care sector.  There is also a focus on developing academic skills, including Maths and English. 
  • The course runs over three days a week (Maths and English is included in this time) and students will participate in a range of various projects, to assess their knowledge and understanding of relevant subjects applicable in the health and social care sector. 
  • Assignments vary to include learning about various communication strategies, understanding what it involves working in the health and social care sector, developing awareness about equality and diversity and the importance of nutrition. 
  • The philosophy of the level 2 provision is to allow students to build on their skills, to achieve their goals and to progress to either gain employment in the health and social care sector, an apprenticeship, or to move to study at level 3 within the department. 

Level 2 Intermediate programme OCR Health Science 

  • The Level 2 Intermediate programme OCR Health Science aims to develop foundation knowledge and understanding of the health and Science.  There is also a focus on developing academic skills, including Maths and English. 
  • The course runs over three days a week (Maths and English is included in this time) and students will participate in a range of various projects, to assess their knowledge and understanding of relevant subjects applicable in the health and Science 
  • Assignments vary to include learning about various Core science and health science subjects, including Radiology, Nutrition, Human Behaviour and Earth Science.  
  • The philosophy of the level 2 provision is to allow students to build on their skills, to achieve their goals and to progress to either, an apprenticeship, or to move to study at level 3 within the department: including the new T level qualifications.  

Level 2 Psychology and Human Behaviour

This exciting new course combines the popular subjects of Psychology, Criminology, and Human Behaviour.

Delivered full-time over the duration of 36 weeks, the course gives you the opportunity to develop the knowledge and the range of skills which are essential for a successful transition to Higher Education.

The course will develop a range of important skills, which will enable progression and future success in study at level 3 and degree level. Upon successful completion of this course, you will have the necessary skills and confidence to pursue a variety of degree studies in fields including Psychology; Criminology; Law; Policing; Social Work, Civil Service, and the Health and Social Care Sector.

  • Academic themes studied will draw from the disciplines of Psychology; Criminology, and Human Behaviour. Studying these subjects will expose you to an exciting programme of study, and will include the following: 
  • Criminology - You will develop an understanding of the key themes associated with this subject, such as offender profiling, the theories of crime, and aspects of law and policing.
  • Psychology - This subject will familiarise students with insights into mental health behaviours, memory, and social processes, such as group behaviour, and obedience and conformity.  Along with this, students will develop key research skills essential to studying Psychology at degree level. 
  • Human Behaviour – introducing topics such as Science of Health and Human Behaviour giving insight into patterns of behaviour, health and wellbeing and evolutionary theories.
  • Alongside the three core subjects, students will complete their Math or English as it is recognised that these skills are essential to successful study at Level 3 and university.  

The structure of the programme provides learners with all of the tools required to undertake a variety of degrees in subjects including: Psychology, Criminology,Youth Studies, Social Work, Probation, Policing, Public Services, Home Office, Criminal Courts, Health & Social Care Sector, Teaching, Law and Mental Health Services.

T Level in Healthcare Science (Level 3)

  • T Levels - T-Levels are qualifications which will follow GCSEs and Technical Awards and offer an attractive alternative to A Levels and apprenticeships. Each qualification lasts two years and is equivalent to three A-Levels. T Levels will combine classroom theory, practical learning and a minimum 45-day industry placement with an employer to make sure you have real experience of the workplace.
  • The Course - The Healthcare Science is a prestigious and rigorous vocational academic qualification which provides learners with the opportunity to develop knowledge, understanding and real-life skills surrounding the Health Science Industry.
    Additionally, there is an Industry Placement with an external employer to enable students to transfer their learning into real working environments. Students will also complete employer set projects that further develop workplace skills in order to prepare for vocationally based future educational programmes and work readiness. This is supported by some of the region's largest healthcare science employers.
  • What the course covers - During the 2-year programme, students will develop the core knowledge and skills that are needed for entry to a range of healthcare occupations involving the study of Health Sciences with core elements and occupational specialisms that make this a good mixture of practical and theoretical skills development. Learners will be assessed through a variety of methods; these involve both internal and external assessments which will allow learners to develop their vocational and study skills.
  • Entry Requirements - The entry requirements for the course are 5 GCSES at grade 5 and above including Maths, English and Science.
  • Progression - Learners will be supported with their progression towards higher education and future employment based within the health science sector. They will be given the opportunity to gain valuable work-related experience to give them engagement, insight, and connections to their future career within the industry. Employment progression opportunities include Paramedic, Healthcare Science Assistant, Radiography Assistant, Sterile Services Technician.

    About the course

    The T Level in Health (Helping the therapeutic team) offers an in-depth investigation into the world of healthcare skills and practices with a specific focus on therapies within the Healthcare sector. The course offers a diverse range of experience into the roles of therapeutic science from physiotherapy, occupational therapy, Speech and language therapies, art and play therapy.

    Entry Requirements

    The entry requirements for the course are 5 GCSES at grade 5 and above including Maths, English and Science. Upon completion of the course, students will receive the equivalent of 3 A-levels, providing students with the key fundamental skills for their next stage of progression.

    The course contents

    This course is planned in consultation with and well respected by professionals within the industry. The 2-year programme explores through theoretical and practical learning experiences core elements of industry specific scenarios and develops key professional skills needed within the therapeutic roles. The course is designed to focus on the core of Health, Care and Science with additional occupational specialisms to enhance students’ skills through a variety of practical and theoretical learning experiences.

    Learning through work placements

    Additionally, students will complete a variety of industry specific placements throughout the course. Placements will be external placements that will enable students to apply their learning to real life scenarios.

    Students will be allowed to put theory in practice and complete employer set projects throughout the duration of their placements. Students will develop key workplace skills that prepare them for vocational and industry specific readiness. Learners will be supported with their progression towards higher education and future employment based within the health science sector.

    Take the opportunity to gain valuable work-related experience to give them engagement, insight, and connections to their future career within the industry.

    Extra

    Students may also gain additional qualifications and experiences through First Aid training courses and specific therapeutic qualifications to enhance the students experience and work readiness. Throughout the course, a variety of educational and industry visits will be complimented by professional guest speakers.

Level 3 Advanced programme Health and Social Care 

  • The Health and Social Care course is a substantial academic and vocational qualification, the equivalent to studying 3 A-Levels, which provides learners with the opportunity to develop knowledge, understanding and real-life skills surrounding our Health and Social care Sector.  
  • It is a two-year programme involving modules such as Safe practice, Nutrition, Psychology, Lifespan development, Anatomy and Physiology and Public Health. Learners will be assessed through a variety of methods; these involve both internal and external assessments which will allow learners to develop their vocational and study skills. 
  • Additionally, there is a specialised work placement for students that enable them to complete work set projects that develop work place skills in order to prepare for vocationally based future educational programmes. This is supported by many regional health and social care providers, including care, health, and social environments as well as specialist schools.  
  • Learners will be supported with their progression towards higher education and future employment based within the health and social care sectors. They will be given the opportunity to gain valuable work-related training and support to develop professional practices. 

Level 3 Advanced programme Working in the Healthcare Sector  

  • The Health and Social Care course is an imaginative and engaging qualification, the equivalent to studying 2 A-Levels, which provides learners with the opportunity to develop knowledge, understanding and real-life skills surrounding our Health and Social Sector. The course focuses on allowing students to gain a first-hand experience to the healthcare sector through a variety of placements.
  • It is a two-year programme involving units such as working in health and social care, safe food preparation, Anatomy and Physiology for emergency medicine, principles of sociology and more that make this a good mixture of practical and theoretical skills development. Learners will be assessed through a variety of methods; these involve both internal and external assessments which will allow learners to develop their vocational and study skills.
  • Additionally, there is a specialised work placement for students that enable them to complete work set projects and work placements in a variety of settings in order to prepare for employment with training or university. This is supported by some of the region's largest healthcare employers such as West Suffolk Hospital and East of England's Ambulance Service and many more.
  • Learners will be supported with their progression towards career goals, and they will be given the opportunity to gain valuable work-related experience to give them the insight and connections with working within the industry. 

Level 3 Advanced programme Psychology and social sciences 

  • The Psychology and Social Sciences course is a rigorous vocational academic qualification, the equivalent to studying 3 A-Levels, which provides learners with the opportunity to develop knowledge, understanding surrounding a wide number of public sector roles, including health and security sectors. 
  • This is a two-year programme involving the study of Applied Psychology, Criminology and Health and Social Care. This provides students with a mixture of learning that supports varied interests within the Applied Social Sciences. There is a balance of external exam and course work for assessment within the programme. 
  • The programme is designed to support students to prepare for further study towards career interests, including educational psychology, protective services, crime and reform services, psychology, and counselling. 
  • Learners will be supported with their progression towards higher education and future employment based within the health and security sectors. They will be given the opportunity to gain valuable work-related experience to give them the insight and connections with working within the industry. 

The study programme for all students includes the main qualification, relevant work experience and or placement as well as personal and professional development through academic skill development to include Math and English for student who working towards grade 4. Additionally, different courses have their own additional programmes.  

What can I do next?

These programmes are designed to support your progression, there are such a wide range of vocations that are available to students progressing from this area.
Upon complete of the level 3 Courses students go onto several pathways including University, Advanced Apprenticeships, and sector specific employment. A wide range of career interests are available for students including radiology, Ambulance technician, nursing, counselling, supporting care, physiotherapy, and protective services.
