Electrical Installation

Welcome to Electrical Installation at West Suffolk College

“Imagine a life without electricity – no mobile phone, no internet, no TV, no lighting!

It was only in 1831 that Michael Faraday discovered electromagnetic induction, the principle behind the electric transformer and generator. This discovery was crucial in allowing electricity to be transformed from a curiosity into a powerful new technology. Now, just under 200 years later, we cannot live without electricity.

Whatever technological developments happen in the future, electricity will be at its heart. Without electricians, the world doesn’t function.” Stuart Hart – Electrotechnical Curriculum Manager

There are currently around 350,000 electricians in the UK, and the UK is heading for a skills crisis in the electrical sector due to the drive for greener technology.

The country will need up to 15,000 more skilled electricians in the next five years to cope with demand for new developments such as smart meters and electric cars.

Major new builds such as Sizewell “C” Power station will also require a significant number of electricians.
