Cheryl HolgateEquality, Diversity and Inclusion Apprentice of the Year, Cheryl Holgate - Studying on an apprenticeship ‘was the best decision I’ve made for many many years’

Cheryl Holgate, 42, from Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire won the equality, diversity and inclusion apprentice of the year award.

Cheryl has worked for Hughes for 15 years. The single mum of three felt ‘stuck in a rut’ - so when the opportunity came up to study on an apprenticeship, she grabbed it.

The highlight of doing the course for Cheryl was ‘gaining my self-confidence back’.

She continued: “I was extremely nervous committing to this in the beginning, especially as I had to take on Maths and English alongside.  But, it’s been the best decision I’ve made for many many years.”

When she found out she had won this award she felt a mixture of ‘shock and disbelief’ - but ‘learning has helped me in all areas of my life and I’m happily educating others, inside work and out’.

Long term Cheryl would like to manage a depot and ‘lead people to success’- and she went on to praise the college for their support.

Cheryl said: “I had an amazing tutor in Danielle – she was down to earth, very supportive and I will miss her now the course has finished.”
