Zac Hillman Bricklayer - Gentleman presenting award to bricklaying competition winner - Zac Hillman won the East South Midlands regional heat, and then went on to receive a pretigious certificate of merit medal in the final.Zac Hillman won the East South Midlands regional heat, and then went on to receive a pretigious certificate of merit medal in the final.

A 21-year-old bricklaying student from Sudbury got through to the finals of a prestigious construction skill contest, and then received a prestigious certificate of merit medal in the final.

Zac Hillman studies at West Suffolk College and took part in The Guild of Bricklayers annual bricklaying competition.

The Bury Development employee was chosen as the overall winner of the ‘seniors’ section in the regional heats of this event.

Zac, who is studying on a level two apprenticeship at the College, then travelled to South Staffordshire College to take part in the national finals.

The competition itself was set up several decades ago according to the President of the Guild of Bricklayers, Bill Bowman. He said: “Competitions are a long-standing tradition (of the Guild) dating back 40 years. I would like to congratulate all competitors.”

Students who were involved were given a model that they had to recreate over a six-hour time frame.

Mark Ames is the subject leader for construction. “Nine regional heats took place and Zac Hillman was placed first in this region,” Mark said. “Zak then travelled to South Staffordshire College to take part in the finals on Wednesday. While Zak didn't win the final, he received a certificate of merit medal - and we are very proud of his efforts. The work that the Bury Developments employee produced was outstanding.”

“Zak also took part in another competition earlier in the year called WorldSkills - and he will find out how he fared in this contest later in September.”
