Financial support for bus travel

For those who are in receipt of financial support from the college, or if you feel you need help with the cost of travel and other college costs, please email collegebursary@easterneducationgroup.ac.uk 

  • Your household income must be below £30k to be eligible for support with travel and other costs associated with your studies.

FAQs

Who can use the college bus service?
This service is available to students attending West Suffolk College and Abbeygate Sixth Form College and is operated by Central Connect

How do I book a seat?
Tickets can be purchased directly from Central Connect. Visit the link on the Travelling to Campus page of the college website to access the booking portal.

What ticket options are available?
Yes, a 3 day termly ticket pass will be available for wsc students only

Is there a reduced ticket option for part-time students?
We are currently exploring a reduced ticket option for part-time students at West Suffolk College. Updates will be shared once confirmed.

How do students board the bus?
Students can use the Central Connect app. Daily tickets can be purchased on the day (subject to availability) - contactless payment required.

Will the routes remain the same for next year?
Route changes are reviewed annually dependent on demand and usage.


What if I have feedback or concerns?
Please contact central connect directly or alternatively you can email the transport team transport@easterneducationgroup.ac.uk

Is financial assistance available?
Yes. Bursaries including a new travel bursary are available to help with transport costs. Visit the Financial Support page on the college website for details.

Can I get a refund if I stop using the bus?
No, payments for college bus passes are non-refundable once issued. Refunds will only be considered in exceptional circumstances, such as a student permanently withdrawing from the college or experiencing serious medical issues that prevent continued travel

What if I lose my phone, or the battery dies?
You will need to speak with the bus driver who will be able to manually sign you on bus.

If I do not achieve the required qualifications and decide to withdraw my college application, am I eligible for a refund on my bus ticket?
Yes, a full refund will be provided as long as the ticket remains unused, and your withdrawal takes place before the academic year begins.

Other bus tickets

There are a number of publicly available bus routes which provide easy access for students from a wide area. Please refer to www.suffolkonboard.com for more details. Some of the commercial companies who provide the bus services on behalf of Suffolk County Council offer their own discounts and travel passes for students:

Public bus routes

*Please note all buses / coaches which stop at West Suffolk College, collect from outside the main campus on Out Risbygate. If you are studying at The Built Environment Campus or University and Professional Development Centre then you will have to allow for time, following your studying to get to the appropriate stops.
 

Train

Bury St Edmunds has a train station, which is a 20 minute walk from the main college campus.

Help with train travel costs

There are two rail cards which are available to our students, to help with travel costs:

  • The 16 - 17 Saver card is £30 and is valid for one year or until your 18th birthday, whichever comes first. As a card holder you can enjoy 50% off standard anytime, off-peak, advanced and season rail tickets helping you save money on trips into town, days out to the coast, travel to college or weekend festivals - as many times as you like.   • The 16 - 25 Railcard can save you up to one third off a wide range of tickets, along with days out, restaurants, hotels and much more. Find out more and how to apply at www.16-25railcard.co.uk

Walk

The main campus is a ten minute walk from the centre of Bury St Edmunds, on the road leading to Newmarket (A14).

The Build Environment Campus and University and Professional Development Centre are based a short walk from the main campus on Anglian Lane (Milburn Campus) and Western Way (STEM Innovation Campus).

Cycle

We encourage all our students and staff to lead a healthy and active lifestyle and where possible, to walk and cycle to college. We have a number of covered places across the campuses, where you can keep your bikes secure.

Suffolk County Council offers information on cycle routes within suffolk, and you can also plan the safest journey on cyclestreets.net. For details on how to download the CycleStreets app, visit cyclestreets.net/mobile

Cars, Motorcycles and Scooters

Parking facilities are available at the main campus. There is a charge for car parking which is payable on entrance via contactless payment only. Motorcycles and scooters can park in designated bays for free. Find out more about car parking for students here.  

Travel Costs Assistance

Suffolk County Council may offer assistance with travel arrangements through the council's Post 16 Discretionary Travel Scheme. Further details and how to apply can be found on Suffolk on Board.

Alternatively West Suffolk College may be able to assist students through the 16-19 Bursary Fund available by application and eligibility is dependent on personal circumstances.
