Is it for me?

This Level 3 study programme builds on students' knowledge, understanding, and skills in applied science, with a strong emphasis on practical techniques. It is designed for learners interested in careers that require a solid foundation in scientific principles and hands-on laboratory experience. 
In addition you will study the diploma in criminology which develops you knowledge of criminology including types of crime, criminal behaviour and how we view crime as well as the legal system.

 

This course is ideal if you want to strengthen your understanding of core sciences and criminal behaviour and prepare for future study or careers in fields such as forensic investigation, forensic policing or legal professions.

 

The applied nature of the programme helps you develop industry-ready skills across all three applied and social science disciplines. You will also enhance your ability to solve problems, think analytically, conduct research, and communicate effectively. 

 

The applied and social science disciplines is thriving and diverse sectors offering you many avenues of  career interest.

 

By completing this course, you will gain a formal science qualifications that is equivalent to two A Levels and Criminology Diploma equal to one  A level and is recognised by universities as well as industry. It provides you with a pathway to numerous progression courses into higher education.

 

Delivered in our state-of-the-art laboratories, you will learn how to work effectively and practice advanced scientific skills. In addition to the practical skills you will develop, you will also improve your employability through the enhancement of your communication, numeracy and information technology abilities.  

 

Students wishing to take a Three A Level Science programme should enrol on the T level science programme.

Criminology Diploma
During the first year students will look at different types of crime, influences on perceptions of crime and why some crimes are unreported. The second Unit will allow learners to begin to gain understanding of why people commit crime.
In the second year of the course, students will start gaining deeper understanding of the criminal justice system from crime scene to court room. The second Unit focus on criminology theories in order to evaluate effectiveness of social control to deliver criminal justice policy.

 
 

Equipment required for the course

You may borrow a laboratory coat and goggles for the duration of your course. Students are welcome to purchase their own if they prefer. A laptop would be beneficial but is not essential. 

Work experience placements

Students are expected to complete 50 hours of work experience each year, we have connections with local companies where you may choose to gain the industry experience to help you to develop your career interests and choose your next steps.

Assessment

Assessment is 50% exams and 50% coursework. Exams are spread throughout the two years. 

Further study

The course can lead to many degree courses and professional qualifications. Previous students have gone on to study political science, criminology, applied sciences, criminology and science investigation.
