About the course

Functional Skills Maths at Sudbury is delivered over 16 weeks, the course is suitable for learners who do not hold a GCSE Grade C or 4 or above.

Sudbury is a small, friendly centre with small class sizes and experienced and patient tutors.

These courses are fully funded. Free to all adults over 19 years of age (as of 31st August) who do not currently hold a Functional Skills Level 2, or a GCSE grade 4/C and have lived in the UK/EEA for the past 3 years.

Daytime and evening classes

We offer classes to suit those who prefer to study in-class on a weekly basis.

These classes run for 16 weeks (term-time only) and each class is 3 hours in duration (with the examinations taking place at the end of the course).

Maths classes run on a Monday as follows

09:00-12:00 Functional Skills Level 1 & 2

13:00-16:00  Functional Skills Entry Levels 1,2 & 3

18:00-21:00   Functional Skills Level 1 & 2

Please be aware that each level of Functional Skills qualification takes 16 weeks, for example, if you start on Entry Level 1, this will take 16 weeks to complete and you will then be invited to enrol onto Entry Level 2 which will run for a further 16 weeks.

There are 2 intakes each year in September and February, therefore the maximum qualification that can be achieved is 2 levels per academic year.

Entry requirements

Before you enrol on the course, you will be invited into the centre to complete an initial assessment, this takes approximately 1 hour.

Once the assessment is complete we will be able to advise you on the most appropriate class and level to start.

We ask that before you enrol, you are confident that you can attend each week for 16 weeks (term time only) ensuring you benefit from maximum teaching and learning opportunities.

Please be aware that you will be invited to a mandatory welcome meeting with your tutor week commencing 8th September 2025. Your classes will then start on 22nd September.

For classes starting in February 2026, the welcome week will be week commencing 2nd February, with classes starting on 23rd February.

Qualifications

At Sudbury you are able to work towards achieving Functional Skills Maths (Edexcel) Entry Levels 1, 2 and 3 and Levels 1 and 2.

The Level 2 qualification is what is considered by many employers and organisations as the equivalent to a GCSE grade C or 4.

Please check with your employer or educational organisation that this qualification is accepted by them for any future employment or study plans you have.

Please note that currently Sudbury does not offer GCSE Maths.

What you'll learn (core modules)

Functional Skills Maths is an Edexcel qualification, it supports you to build everyday practical skills and topics covered include;  problem solving, handling information and data, calculating ratios, averages and areas of shapes and space.

For more information on qualifications, please see the Pearson Edexcel website Functional Skills | Edexcel Functional Skills | Pearson qualifications

How will I be assessed?

The Functional Skills qualification consists of one externally assessed assessment, comprising two separate sections a non-calculator section (calculator prohibited) and a calculator section (calculator permitted).

There will be the opportunity to sit mock exams, in preparation, and your tutor will provide written and verbal feedback. Throughout the course you  will complete what we call 'milestone assessments' these will help your tutor to determine your progress and any support needs but do not count towards your final exam grade.

Exams are paper based and will be sat in the Sudbury Centre under exam conditions.
