Level 1

This course will provide you with the fundamental foundation training for employment or further education within the hospitality industry. The aim of the course is to provide you with the basic practical skills, knowledge and confidence in food preparation, cooking, and food and beverage service. You'll develop relevant core skills for a career in the hospitality industry. You'll gain practical experience training in our purpose-built kitchens and upmarket restaurant Edmunds where you'll learn how to prepare and cook a variety of fresh foods, customer service, reception duties, and food and beverage service techniques. The course offers a broad range of vocational and functional skills training, preparing you for employment or for the next level of your education.



Foundation in Business and Service Industries is a BTEC study program that allows students to develop and prepare for their future specialist sector.

There are different pathways within this study programme and students can choose either

Hair and Beauty

Catering and Hospitality

Business, Tourism and Events


How does it work?

All students will:

Complete practical taster sessions in their chosen pathway.

Attend English and maths lessons to improve their grades for further progression.

Participate in health and wellbeing sessions tailored to the industry pathway and student needs

Go on a variety of trips and visits to various fun and exciting locations 

Have opportunities to meet with guest speakers and employers from their chosen industry. 

Work on live projects based on the chosen industry pathway


Increase their self-confidence and team working skills on this study program

All of these exciting things run parallel to the curriculum delivery and provide great opportunities for assessment.

This study programme will allow students to gain the necessary foundation knowledge and study skills required for the next step in their chosen industry. 

Why have I not heard of this course before?

The course is brand new and has been designed to meet student's needs.

How will I be assessed?

The Assessment methods will vary, there will be some written work, some practical work and assessment opportunities within trips and visits. Please note that there are NO formal exams on the course with the exception of Maths and English.

How many days will I be in college?

You will be timetabled for 3 days a week in college.

Since i started at WSC my life has completely changed.  I have made better friends, the course itself has made me a better person.  Whilst i was at secondary school i did not want to be there but it is totally different at college.  I actually want to be there, the course is very interest, i am doing business and tourism, i am so intrigued by this course.  My course director is really fun but can be strict some of the time but the teachers treat us like adults, they treat us with respect, not like at school when the teachers there treated the students as children.

Level 1 will suit you if you're starting out and want a good basic understanding of the industry - you may still be at school and preparing for GCSEs or an apprenticeship. You want a qualification that can help you with ongoing study or to find your first job in hospitality.

You complete a number of core units from a range that includes:

  • Healthy eating
  • Front office operations
  • Guest services.

The course is designed to give students a sound foundation in craft skills in the catering industry. It gives a good professional practical and theoretical foundation of food preparation and cooking, plus food and drink service, offering an initial step to someone who has strong practical skills with managerial potential.
