You will be expected to be in college for a minimum of 3 days per week, from 9:00 to 4:15. Your timetable will be confirmed at induction but will include both theory and practical sessions.

GCSE Maths, English and Science at Grade 2 OR Entry 3 Functional Skills Maths and English, plus GCSE Science at Grade 2.

If you're looking for an animal-based course but have little experience, or perhaps you didn't gain the grades you were hoping for, this could be your perfect course! 

 

The Level 1 Certificate in Land-based Studies (Animal Care) is an introductory programme that provides a starting point for people wishing to work with animals, allowing progression to further qualifications or into employment opportunities. You can top this up to the full Diploma by undertaking the second year.

 

You will be offered an extraordinary experience at our on-site animal centre, where you will interact with our resident animals allowing you to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting. From rabbits and rodents to exotic reptiles and birds, our centre offers a wide range of species, allowing you to observe, experience and develop an understanding of animal handling and behaviour, care, feeding and welfare.  This will not only enhance your academic journey but also nurture your compassion, empathy, and dedication towards the welfare of animals.  

 

Working with animals can be incredibly fulfilling, offering countless opportunities for connection and making a real difference. But it's not always easy – you've got to be tough, ready to work in any weather and take care of daily tasks like cleaning and feeding. Yet, for those passionate about animals, it's all worth it. Your dedication and excitement are key, especially in a field that's always evolving. This hands-on experience isn't just about cuddling cute critters; it's about preparing you for success in a competitive industry where your love for animals and hard work truly pay off.

Equipment required for the course

Students are required to purchase and wear PPE when working practically within the college's on-site Animal Centre. Please visit Animal Centre Guidance for details on how to buy uniform.

Assessment

This course is assessed using a variety of different methods including a two online multiple-choice tests, written assignments and practical assessments. All elements of the qualification must be completed to successfully achieve the Level 1. You will also be required to continue your Maths and English study alongside the programme, unless you hold a GCSE Grade 4.
