Our next Functional Skills English class in Soham will start in September 2025.
The Adult Maths and English department offers a range of high-quality teaching options to suit all expectations and lifestyles:
Evening Classes
Our face to face classes suit those who prefer to study in-class on a weekly basis in Soham. These classes run for 16 weeks (term time only) and each is 3 hours in duration. Induction, 14 weeks of teaching and an examination at the end of the course on week 16.
For those not able to study in a classroom, we also offer online classes:
The fully online course is designed for students wishing to achieve a functional skills qualification without the requirement of attending a face to face class. These courses run for 12 weeks and can be studied from the comfort of your own home, however will require you to have access to, and the ability to use a digital device such as a computer, laptop. or tablet with access to the Microsoft Teams application via the internet (the examinations will take place at your nearest West Suffolk College Community and Business Centre).
Functional Skills English at Sudbury is delivered over 16 weeks, the course is suitable for learners who do not hold a GCSE Grade C or 4 or above.
Sudbury is a small, friendly centre with small class sizes and experienced and patient tutors.
These courses are fully funded. Free to all adults over 19 years of age (as of 31st August) who do not currently hold a Functional Skills Level 2, or a GCSE grade 4/C and have lived in the UK/EEA for the past 3 years.
Daytime and evening classes
We offer classes to suit those who prefer to study in-class on a weekly basis.
These classes run for 16 weeks (term-time only) and each class is 3 hours in duration (with the examinations taking place at the end of the course).
English classes run on a Tuesday as follows
09:00-12:00 Functional Skills Level 1 & 2
13:00-16:00 Functional Skills Entry Levels 1,2 & 3
18:00-21:00 Functional Skills Level 1 & 2
Please be aware that each level of Functional Skills qualification takes 16 weeks, for example, if you start on Entry Level 1, this will take 16 weeks to complete and you will then be invited to enrol onto Entry Level 2 which will run for a further 16 weeks.
There are 2 intakes each year in September and February, therefore the maximum qualification that can be achieved is 2 levels per academic year.
