EVAN PECK BOARD 1 West Suffolk CollegeThe Wool4School competition became part of the first year students’ work on the Fashion and Textiles course. They learned a lot about wool and its uses and even ‘yarn bombed’ part of the college quad! They all prepared a mood board, a creative fashion illustration, a technical sketch and a 500-word creative statement.

Students from the School of Art and Design at West Suffolk College have been celebrating success in prestigious national competitions for Fashion and Photography.

Two Fashion and Textile students got through to the final of the Wool4School competition with their pop star designs, and their tutor has come out tops by winning the competition’s Teacher 2018 prize.

All the students studied the fundamentals of fashion design and the versatility of wool and had to design an outfit for their favourite musician to wear on stage. Evan Peck put in designs for Dua Lipa and Poppy Backhouse designed for Billie Eilish. Both entries earned them places in the final 20 out of thousands of students in schools and colleges throughout England.

The competition became part of the first year students’ work on the Fashion and Textiles course. They learned a lot about wool and its uses and even ‘yarn bombed’ part of the college quad! They all prepared a mood board, a creative fashion illustration, a technical sketch and a 500-word creative statement.

Their tutor, Emily Streatfeild, entered the teacher competition with a creative statement all about teaching her students about wool and the final quality of the student entries. From all the teachers across the country that entered Emily was chosen as the winning entry and has been given a £300 voucher, membership of the Design and Technology Association for a year and an invitation to a textile class in London.

More success for Photography and the Fashion and Media Promotion students who took part in the Beyond the Frame competition run by Norwich University of the Arts. The competition, sponsored by Canon, attracted 400 entries nationwide. Six of our students’ photos were chosen as finalists and included in the final exhibition. Georgia Mills, Barney Maguire, Abbie Rowan, Eden King, Harry Taylor and Amy Sorrell.

Out of the six, Georgia Mills photo of a friend taken under Felixstowe pier was picked by judge James Smith as his favourite. Georgia was also interviewed on BBC Look East about her picture.

Derek Johnson, director of art and design, said:”This is a recognition of Emily’s hard work, vision and dedication to her student’s success. Having two students in the national top 20 out of thousands of entries is superb and six finalists for the photographic competition is also brilliant. This shows the high standard of their work.”

Fashion and textile students will be showing off more of their work on the catwalk at the Fashion Fusion show at the Apex in Bury st Edmunds on Friday 4 May in aid of St Nicholas Hospice.
