West Suffolk College has been feeling prickly about the decline of hedgehogs in the UK and has been raising money for a charity associated with these creatures at the 2023 Suffolk Show.

A team from the animal studies department drummed up cash for the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS).

17-year-old Mikayla Stannard from Ipswich is on a level three Animal Management course at the College and hopes to become a vet in the future.

Mikayla explains: "We are working hard to try and protect this species as they are currently in decline. We’ve made tracking tunnels, looked at the way we cut our grass at the College and we have received a bronze award from HPS for our efforts and we are working hard to protect them. We promoted our campaign and raised money for British Hedgehog Preservation Society at the Suffolk Show.”

Also on the Animal Studies area at the show, the college had information on courses, doggy first aid demos and they had gerbils, a millipede, stick insects, frogs, cockroaches and a snake to help promote these programmes.
