The Hair and Beauty Academy at West Suffolk College celebrated two exciting achievements this week as it was the first college in the UK to become a Fellowship of British Hairdressing Centre of Excellence for Education, alongside opening its newly refurbished Beauty and Nail Salons.

The occasion was commemorated together with the Concept Hair roadshow with representatives from brands such as L’Oreal, Denman, DIVA Pro, and Wahl allowing students to talk to experts, get hands on with new products, and find out about opportunities in the industry. Students also watched live demonstrations showcasing new trends including a live cut by Robert Eaton, current British Hairdresser of the Year, representing The Fellowship for British Hairdressing.

Robert unveiled a plaque to mark the Academy’s new Centre of Excellence status alongside Marnie Randall, Head of the Department of Hair and Beauty Studies. He said “It has been a fantastic event, it really brings to light so many aspects of the Hair industry from colour work, to cutting, to dressing hair and men’s hairdressing. And for the next generation of hair dressing talent which this College is full of, it’s great to put on events like this to help everyone, and from the Fellowship’s perspective, we really want to support everyone at the College and be a part of everyone’s development for the future.”

The college was proud to announce that it has gifted all current student’s membership to the Fellowship of British Hairdressing where they can receive state of the art training and education. Marnie said: “We are so proud to be the first college to be part of the fellowship of British hairdressing Centre of Excellence scheme. To be able to gift this opportunity to our students is amazing, we are passionate about education, we are passionate about this link with the Fellowship as it’s such a great opportunity access to training, education, and materials. We feel our students will grow from it and hope they become the industry stars of the future showcasing their work at events like this.”

Hairdressing student’s took inspiration from the event straight back to the salons to hone their skills in front of guests. Student Leah Barker said, “It’s been a great opportunity to learn and ask questions, and just see all these amazing creatives in action.”

Guests were also able to tour the seven Academy’s salons with long time supporter of the college Alex Hurt, Spa Director of Weavers House Spa, opening the newly refurbished nail and beauty salons. She highlighted the importance of bringing all elements of the beauty industry to the college with these industry standard facilities.
