Psychology and Social Sciences

This course is suitable for those seeking to develop their skills and knowledge in Applied Psychology and Social Sciences with opportunity for progression onto university degree courses or employment.

This one or two year course provides students with a flexible learning plan where all students study the same subject in the first academic year and then have the option to continue their study in the second year within a small number of science or social science disciplines. 

This course is an excellent choice for students interested in psychology with additional interests in criminology, health and wellbeing

Students will gain qualifications in the first year to equal 1.5 A'levels and Core Maths.

One of the great benefits of studying with West Suffolk College is the highly trained professional team of staff all of whom have industry experiences that they share with the learners and support their development. 

An additional  valuable component within the course structure is the  work placement that is undertaken of 100 hours each year. Work placement is organised by the work placement team.

It is a full time course. You attend college three days per week and additionally one day is out in placement throughout the college year. 

This offers the opportunity to work in a variety of settings, including educational psychology, protective services, crime and reform services, psychology and counselling. 

Level 2 Psychology and Human Behaviour

This exciting new course combines the popular subjects of Psychology, Criminology, and Human Behaviour.

Delivered full-time over the duration of 36 weeks, the course gives you the opportunity to develop the knowledge and the range of skills which are essential for a successful transition to Higher Education.

The course will develop a range of important skills, which will enable progression and future success in study at level 3 and degree level. Upon successful completion of this course, you will have the necessary skills and confidence to pursue a variety of degree studies in fields including Psychology; Criminology; Law; Policing; Social Work, Civil Service, and the Health and Social Care Sector.

  • Academic themes studied will draw from the disciplines of Psychology; Criminology, and Human Behaviour. Studying these subjects will expose you to an exciting programme of study, and will include the following: 
  • Criminology - You will develop an understanding of the key themes associated with this subject, such as offender profiling, the theories of crime, and aspects of law and policing.
  • Psychology - This subject will familiarise students with insights into mental health behaviours, memory, and social processes, such as group behaviour, and obedience and conformity.  Along with this, students will develop key research skills essential to studying Psychology at degree level. 
  • Human Behaviour – introducing topics such as Science of Health and Human Behaviour giving insight into patterns of behaviour, health and wellbeing and evolutionary theories.
  • Alongside the three core subjects, students will complete their Math or English as it is recognised that these skills are essential to successful study at Level 3 and university.  

The structure of the programme provides learners with all of the tools required to undertake a variety of degrees in subjects including: Psychology, Criminology,Youth Studies, Social Work, Probation, Policing, Public Services, Home Office, Criminal Courts, Health & Social Care Sector, Teaching, Law and Mental Health Services.

Level 3 Advanced programme psychology and social sciences 

  • The Psychology and Social Sciences course is a rigorous vocational academic qualification, the equivalent to studying 3 A-Levels, which provides learners with the opportunity to develop knowledge, understanding surrounding a wide number of public sector roles, including health and security sectors. 
  • This is a two-year programme involving the study of Applied Psychology, Criminology and Health and Social Care. This provides students with a mixture of learning that supports varied interests within the Applied Social Sciences. There is a balance of external exam and course work for assessment within the programme. 
  • The programme is designed to support students to prepare for further study towards career interests, including educational psychology, protective services, crime and reform services, psychology, and counselling. 
  • Learners will be supported with their progression towards higher education and future employment based within the health and security sectors. They will be given the opportunity to gain valuable work-related experience to give them the insight and connections with working within the industry. 

The study programme for all students includes the main qualification, relevant work experience and or placement as well as personal and professional development through academic skill development to include Math and English for student who working towards grade 4. Additionally, different courses have their own additional programmes.
