The UAL L4 CGI and Animation for TV and Film programme is ideal for any potential student wishing to pursue their passion within the modern and highly creative world of VFX, 3D and 2D animated characters, scenes and scenarios.
Potential students would be those candidates that may have already dabbled in the design and planning of stories and characters and now want to take these skills further.
This course will use mixed teaching methods but the majority of time is spent on project work, software skills, workshops and lectures. The course is assessed through individual and group project work. Employment opportunities include roles at computer animation companies and work with TV and film VFX companies.
Students are introduced to the core skills, theories and techniques whilst developing their understanding of professional working practices. Students begin with an introduction to a variety of 2D terms, methods and principles in 2D design and end with 3D modelling and animation which includes a strong maths and logic element. Students learn the foundations and principles of how to animate, plan/design shots and sequences, produce effective pre-production, animatics and pre-visualisations.
The year provides a preliminary step in the analysis of motion, computer animation and production methods. This will lead to exploring the art direction and narrative directives in a short film production to retain the quality of work produced from 2D/3D visual effects and animation and to access the emerging trends in motion capture animation and rotoscoping.
Students will have opportunities to extend their research and referencing, to extend these methods so it can be applied to their own study via creative & technical 3D modelling techniques.
Students will create work for a portfolio or a showreel piece that highlights their best modelling, design and/or animation work.
Established links already exist with many VFX companies such as Moving Picture Company, Framestore and Double Negative which will provide industry speakers and potential work experience opportunities.
