Level 1

This is the first year of formal training to become a professional barber. You will be trained in a broad range of personal and technical skills that you will require to be confident in this career. You will be in college for approximately 3 days a week,  although there may be some weeks that require you to attend extra days, ensuring plenty of notice is given, You will be required to study English and Maths also as part of your study programme, only students that have achieved a Grade 4 in both subjects will be exempt from this part of the programme. You will learn both theory and practical knowledge and this will support you in assignments and exams for each unit of your qualification and the practical assessments that you will have to achieve in order to pass. You will be required to attend Progression and Personal Development lessons once a week to prepare you for work. You will also be expected to have real work experience in a professional barber shop for a minimum of 60 hours over the year, this will be recorded and monitored by your course director, you will need to complete a log of the hours and experiences you have whilst in this placement.  

 

Foundation in Business and Service Industries is a BTEC study program that allows students to develop and prepare for their future specialist sector.

There are different pathways within this study programme and students can choose either

 

Hair and Beauty

Catering and Hospitality

Business, Tourism and Events

 

 

How does it work?

All students will:

Complete practical taster sessions in their chosen pathway.

 

Attend English and maths lessons to improve their grades for further progression.

 

Participate in health and wellbeing sessions tailored to the industry pathway and student needs

 

Go on a variety of trips and visits to various fun and exciting locations

 

Have opportunities to meet with guest speakers and employers from their chosen industry.

 

Work on live projects based on the chosen industry pathway

 

Increase their self-confidence and team working skills on this study program

All of these exciting things run parallel to the curriculum delivery and provide great opportunities for assessment.

This study programme will allow students to gain the necessary foundation knowledge and study skills required for the next step in their chosen industry. 

Why have I not heard of this course before?

The course is brand new and has been designed to meet student's needs.

How will I be assessed?

The Assessment methods will vary, there will be some written work, some practical work and assessment opportunities within trips and visits. Please note that there are NO formal exams on the course with the exception of Maths and English.

How many days will I be in college?

You will be timetabled for 3 days a week in college.
