Abbie Smith - a student from One Sixth Form CollegeYoung Game Designers BAFTA Awards

Two students from West Suffolk College have been nominated for a BAFTA.

Isabelle Johnson, 18, from Bury St Edmunds and George White, 18, from Thetford both study on a level three games design course at the College.

As part of their course they have to create a new games concept.

Course tutors then encouraged the pair to put their work forward for this year’s student Young Games Designer BAFTA awards (https://ygd.bafta.org) and they have both been nominated in the ‘Game Making Award – 15-18 category’.

1 Isabelle Johnson

Isabelle said: “I really got into playing games during lockdown and then took a games design course after initially studying childcare. In terms of this, I’ve been nominated for a BAFTA. I did a project at College making a game called Gul-p. It’s a comedic game. You have a food stall and you are being attacked by seagulls and you squirt sauce at them. I’m a finalist and winners will be announced on 22 June. I will be watching on a livestream. I will also get the chance to go to a networking event in London later in the year irrespective of how I get on. It would be insane to win a BAFTA. It’s a once in a lifetime experience. It would put my name out there.”

2 George White

George also got nominated for his game called the Intergalactic Contests of the Speaker. George said: “It was a confidence boost when I heard about the nomination. The concept is a sports game that takes place on a randomised planet. I’ll be watching the awards. If I was to win it would be a massive thing and it would help with my career.”

A college spokesperson said: “We are so proud of Isabelle and George. Their creativity for games design is outstanding. Winning a BAFTA could be life changing for them.”
