Overview of course

The aim of this course is to study the core conditions and practise the basic skills of person centred counselling and the philosophy and theory underpinning them. We shall consider some definitions of counselling and where counselling fits into a wide range of helping methods, such as advising, teaching, nursing etc. Students will be encouraged to relate the course to their own life and working experience so that the skills and knowledge they acquire are seen as directly relevant to them.

It is important to note that the class is not intended for personal problem-solving. Because of the nature of the learning, however, some quite deep-seated emotions can be stirred, so applicants presently undergoing any personal crisis should carefully consider their fitness to participate

What will I learn?

As befits its person centred orientation, experiential learning forms the largest part of the course. This includes group discussions and counselling practice, interspersed with theoretical input by the tutor, and reinforced by modest homework assignments including reading and the keeping of a work journal. Students are encouraged to evaluate their own learning and progress, so that they might clearly indicate their future training, educational and personal needs. You can expect challenge, confrontation, support and encouragement.

As a result of the course you should be able to: Identify and name the core conditions of person centred counselling. Practise basic counselling skills based on the core conditions. Identify those situations where counselling is and is not appropriate. In doing so, be able to determine what other activities and processes might be more appropriate. Relate the course learning to your personal and professional development as a whole. Determine what further steps you might take in relation to your further education and development A book list will be given out on the first night.
