Overview of course

Psychology is a fascinating science and sometimes throws up some very surprising results! Have you ever wondered what a Freudian Slip is and why it happens? Or, why positive reinforcement is so important in training and development? Using case studies of psychological research (including  some individual case studies on serial killers) this short course will introduce you to the perspectives of psychology concentrating on the ethical dilemmas of studying human and animal behaviour and studies in conformity and abnormality.

What will I learn?

The course will aim to cover the following topics and areas of interest:

  • Psychodynamic perspective of Psychology - Freudian psychology
  • Behaviourist perspective of Psychology
  • Cognitive perspective of Psychology
  • Biological perspective of Psychology - elements of neuroscience
  • Humanist perspective of Psychology
  • Ethics of Psychological experimentation
  • Conformity - why did "normal, average" people become Nazi monsters?
  • What is Normality? - How do we judge?
  • Personal perception - What do you know about yourself and how are you perceived?
  • Ainsworth stranger situations - the theory of child development.

Who is the course for?

Although elements of the GCSE syllabus will be covered, this is a leisure learning course and no qualification will be offered. Students will receive a certificate of attendance. Students aged 19+ with an interest in taking their first steps in towards learning about Psychology and human behaviour will enjoy this course.
