The last ten years have seen a significant increase in the amount of travel for both leisure and business purposes and despite concerns over global warming, Britain's travel and tourism industry remains a vital and significant contributor to our economy. Tourist boards and strategic authorities are vital for the thousands of small enterprises that provide accommodation, food, attractions and travel services to tourists in Britain. This qualification develops learners' knowledge and experience in a range of directions including locational geography, customer service and employability skills. It also encourages achievement and opens doors to enable learners to move directly into employment, Apprenticeships or progress through further Level 3 study to university.

Four GCSEs Grade D or above, including Maths or English at Grade D (3). However, this course offers flexibility on the outcome of a personal interview and selection process with the curriculum staff.
The College offers a wide menu of Level 2 qualifications. We will work with all learners in their first six weeks at College to place them on the appropriate programme that best meets their individual needs and best ensures their success. Within this course, learners will have the opportunity to achieve the Edexcel Level 2 Extended Certificate in Travel and Tourism. Additional qualifications in airline cabin crew and other related areas may also be studied during your time at West Suffolk College.
What you'll learn (core modules)
The travel industry is very broad and diverse so our modules and qualifications reflect this. Assessment mainly takes the form of a variety of course work and 'live projects' run throughout the year. Presentation skills will also be developed and some of the units and qualifications will require practical assessment to be carried out. Topics covered include the UK and overseas holiday destinations, customer service, nature and the effects of world travel, marketing, airports and airline operations. A number of trips and visits will be arranged during the year to support curriculum delivery.

Our qualifications will give you the chance to develop industry standard skills and character strengths. All courses will require resilience, determination to succeed and professional conduct. Full attendance and meeting assignment deadlines will be critical to your success. We are preparing individuals for university education and employment. How will I be assessed?
The assessment approach allows learners to receive feedback on their progress throughout the course as they provide evidence towards the grading criteria. Evidence for assessment may be generated through a range of activities including role play and oral presentation. Learners are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and achievement, taking into account sector standards for behaviour and performance. Learners will be timetabled for 3 days per week to include timetabled, supervised, tutored learning support and directed study sessions to enable assignment tasks to be completed in College. Learners should also be prepared to study at home for approximately 4 hours a week. Any student aged 16 to 19 who does not hold a GCSE A* to C (9 to 4 on the new grading structure) or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English by age 16 will need to continue to study these subjects in each academic year.
Where is the course delivered? (facilities/classrooms)
The course is delivered on the main West Suffolk College campus. Practical assessments are mainly carried out in our travel and tourism base rooms however, we are fortunate to have access to a number of key local and national organisations where further additional training is facilitated.
Where will the course take me?
On successful completion of the Level 2 Extended Certificate in Travel and Tourism qualification, learners can progress to employment, Apprenticeships and/or continue their study in the same, or a related vocational area. Progression to the Level 3 Extended Diploma Travel and Tourism is a popular route with students where the knowledge learnt at level 2 can be used and developed further on this A level equivilent qualification. Additional qualifications in airline cabin crew and other related areas may also be studied at level 3 along with opportunities for a UK and European residential visit.
Will I need any materials or equipment?
For the course, you will need to purchase a course textbook as well as your standard learner stationary. You may also need to spend approximately £50 per year to cover the cost of course-related trips and visits.
