About the course
This Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Barbering aims to provide you with a range of specialist technical practical skills and knowledge which will equip you to seek employment or further training within the barbering industry.
This course is aimed at you should you wish to become a senior barber working on male clients.
Entry requirements
You will need to be motivated to achieve this qualification, be driven to be successful and be willing to work independently, be willing to self study, and have the discipline required to meet deadlines and revise for exams.
You will need to have completed the Level 2 Qualification in Hairdressing, or Barbering, or Cutting & styling or Colouring & Styling.
We recommend you achieve a Level 2 qualification in barbering or have equivalent industry experience before enrolling on this course. you will require a placement in a barbershop or hair salon that provides barbering services in order to confirm a place on this programme.

What you'll learn (core modules)
To achieve the Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Barbering candidates must successfully complete all the mandatory assessment components as well as the optional assessment components for their chosen optional units.

- Unit 311 Design and create a range of facial hair shapes
- Unit 312 Provide shaving services
- Unit 202 Colour and lighten men's hair

Achievement of this qualification demonstrates to an employer that you will have the skills and knowledge of health & safety, customer service, advanced cutting, shaving and styling services required for you to be employed as a senior barber. You will develop study skills and the resilience to learn, fail, improve and then master the skills required to be an advanced barber in this exciting and thriving industry.
Each unit will be practically assessed whilst learners work on clients in the salon session, during which they will be supervised and supported throughout. Oral assessment is also used to support practical and written evidence.
End of year practical synoptic exams (practical trade tests) and theory exams will form your final grade of Pass/Merit/Distinction.
Learners will be required to provide models for assessments throughout the year.
How will I be assessed?
This course has an end point practical assessment, similar to a trade test, this covers practical skills and behaviours of the professional barber, this happens at the start of the third term. There will also be and end of course exam at the end of the second term, this covers theory taught across all units of barbering.
Both elements must be completed and achieved in order to achieve a full qualification.
You will be required to supply models for practice and exams.

Where will the course take me?
This qualification will lead to employment in a barber shop, cruise ship or hotel barber shop. It can also open up a world of opportunity for your creative talents to be explored and demonstration events, competition showcases and teaching & training will be an option for you.
You could also progress into employment or to a Level 4 qualification in Advanced Techniques or Management.
Will I need any materials or equipment?
Yes there will be a top up list available for those who have the majority of tools in their kit, this will be provided on enrolment to the programme. Tuition heads are required for learning of techniques before moving to live models. A uniform polo shirt is also required to be worn whilst in the college salons, we will provide the order forms to you.

How much will it cost?
There is Government funding for students between 16-19 years old for the cost of the course. Students over 19 will be entitled to a level 3 programme as long as you haven't already achieved an equivalent qualification in any other subject. If this is the case you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan that will pay for your course fees.
