About the course

This course covers all the skills learners will require to become a professional colourist in the  hairdressing industry. This carefully designed programme includes both theory and practical lessons alongside a commercial salon session ensuring access to paying clients to establish a 'real working environment'. Usually learners will attend College for three days.  The remaining two days are allocated for personal study. Learners will need to find a salon placement which will build relationships in the industry, and could lead to employment in the future. This qualification is open to students of any age and prior experience.

Entry requirements

Entry is by interview. The course requires learners aged 16-18 years to hold the Level 1 Hairdressing Certificate or equivalent qualification. We will also consider students, without prior hairdressing experience or qualifications, who have achieved A*-C (4) GCSEs in English, Mathematics and one other subject, and there is a strong emphasis on the personal qualities required to work in a service industry. Applicants that are 19+ do not require previous qualification, but will need to be interviewed to agree suitability.  Successful applicants will be required to have current or planned experience working in a salon environment.

Some of the products used in the hairdressing and beauty industry contain nuts and therefore this occupation may not be suitable for those people with an allergy to nuts.

Every student is expected to work towards a GCSE Grade C (4) in English and Maths. All students, including those that have achieved C (4) grade in these subjects, will be expected to attend Directed Study sessions to complete course work tasks and assignment
