About the course

This vocational course introduces learners to all the key areas relating to a career in Sport and Active Leisure. Throughout the course, learners will develop knowledge of the varied job opportunities available in the sport and leisure industry.

There is an emphasis on health, fitness and taking part in sport. Teamwork skills are encouraged by taking part in a variety of sports and activities. West Suffolk College has The Sports Academy for those students who wish to take part in sport at team level, in addition to their studies. Work skills are promoted by assisting leaders of sports or leisure activities to deliver activities or assisting at events.

Entry requirements

Entry is by interview. Applicants will need to be motivated and show a genuine interest in taking part in sport. In order to achieve the Level 1 diploma, learners will need to have a mature and responsible outlook to their studies. Students who have not achieved a GCSE Grade D (3) in maths or English will be required to achieve a pass at Level 1 in Functional Skills in both subjects. There will be opportunity to progress to Level 2 in functional skills when appropriate.

Qualifications

Students will achieve a BTEC Level 1 in Sport and Public Services together with a Level 1 or Level 2 in Maths and English functional skills or a GCSE.

What you'll learn (core modules)

Learners are timetabled for three days per week and classes run between 9.15am and 4.45pm. Our highly enthusiastic team of staff encourage students, whatever their ability or sporting prowess, to enjoy taking part in or organising sport sessions.

Any student aged 16 to 19 who does not hold a GCSE A* to C (9 to 4 on the new grading structure) or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English by age 16 will need to continue to study these subjects in each academic year.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is through practical and written assessments

Where is the course delivered? (facilities/classrooms)

The course will be delivered within a classroom setting as well as outside in our sports hall using our sporting facilities

Where will the course take me?

The course is well suited to learners who would like to progress to GCSE Mathematics and English, along with a Level 2 Sport Performance course, broadening their knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of sport and fitness and training testing.
