About the course

This 2 year programme is the equivalent to 3x A-levels, and is for those looking to progress onto Work, Higher Education and University. The modules are designed to provide students with a detailed insight into the vast array of careers and industries within Sport and Sports Science such as Anatomy, Physiology, Nutrition, Sports Injuries, Psychology, Sports Massage, Sports Coaching, Biomechanics, and many more. Students from this course regularly progress onto university, studying areas such as Physiotherapy, Sports Therapy, Physical Education, Sports Nutrition, and Sports Science.

Entry requirements

Entry is by interview. Applicants will need a minimum of five GCSE's Grade 4 or above, including maths and English at Grade 4 and science at Grade 4. Applicants will need to be motivated and manage their own time. Learners will need to have a mature and responsible outlook as they will be required to work with a high degree of independence for certain aspects of the course.

Qualifications

Within this course, learners will have the opportunity to take either Edexcel Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sports and Exercise Science, Edexcel Level 3 Diploma in Sports and Exercise Science, or Edexcel Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Sports and Exercise Science.

What you'll learn (core modules)

Learners will be taught by a highly qualified and passionate team who have relevant industry experience as well as an excellent track record in teaching and learning. The course content includes Anatomy, Physiology, Sport Psychology and Fitness testing, Research Projects, Coaching and Social Aspects in Sport. We also explore elements such as sports biomechanics, sports injuries and sports massage as well as sports nutrition and instructing physical activity. This variety allows all learners to gain excellent tools for the industry as well as higher education. The course requires learners to be in College for four days a week and is specifically designed to enable learners to gain an understanding of the main areas within the field of sport and exercise sciences. The course has a large applied science component within it. Learners are expected to complete a minimum of ten hours home study in addition to timetabled sessions. Additionally, work experience contributes as a large and valuable cornerstone of our courses. Students are required to commit to a work experience placement per academic year.

 

Any student aged 16 to 19 who does not hold a GCSE A* to C (9 to 4 on the new grading structure) or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English by age 16 will need to continue to study these subjects in each academic year.

Where will the course take me?

The course is well suited to learners who also want to develop their academic skills within a subject area that they enjoy with the intention to continue into the sport and leisure industry or higher education. Previous learners have gained entry to some of the most prestigious sport and exercise science universities. Of the students who complete this course, approximately 3/4 progress into higher education and the Universities of their choice, with remainder gaining employment in local sport and leisure fields and/or continuing their studies in apprenticeships and other further education courses. Pathways include Physiotherapy, Sports Therapy, Sports Science, Dietetics and Sports Management, Coaching and Strengths and Conditioning roles.

 

We are also very proud to offer a successful degree course in Sports Development and Coaching following the completion of a Level 3 qualification, and have seen a steady increase in internal progression from our college students in recent years.

Will I need any materials or equipment?

Essential: Sport and exercise clothing and kit for practical activities (indoor and outdoor) A range of pens to include highlighters and different colours. A note pad and a set of 'plastic wallets' for submitting coursework in. Desirable: Smart device, IPad/MacBook/laptop BTEC Level 3 Sport and Exercise Sciences textbook
