Overview of course

This short course will explore psychological theories around why people engage in extreme crimes and what (if anything) can be done to rehabilitate them. Case studies of serial killers and other extreme criminals will be used to illustrate the theories. We will also look at how criminal profiles are developed and their potential uses and limitations. Subject matter will be quite gruesome at times, so common sense is advised.

What will I learn?

Week 1: Psychodynamic and post-Freudian theories of crime

Week 2: Behavioural and cognitive theories of crime

Week 3: Psychobiological theories of crime

Week 4: Criminal and geographic profiling

Who is the course for?
