About the course

This course is designed to provide an insight into the Science  behind Health. You study, research and gain first hand experience about a vast range of scientific areas from planning investigations, the movement of our bodies to the impact of food miles on the environment and what science is doing to meet the worldwide food shortage. Links are made to current working practices used within related industries through speakers, visits and work experience undertaken by learners.

There is also a work placement element in the course that can help you to develop your career goals.

Entry requirements


Four GCSE's , to include Maths or English and a Science Grade grades 4/3.

All courses require an interview.


Level 2 Cambridge Technical Diploma in Science.

What you'll learn (core modules)

You will gain an understanding and knowledge of Biology, Chemistry and Physics alongside improving your practical skills, problem solving and communications skills. You will complete assignments on a broad range of topics along with planning and carrying out your own investigations.

Units include topics such as health and safety in the laboratory.

The course mixes theory and practical skills that are taught by an experienced team who have industry based backgrounds.


Students will also study Math and English as required in order to achieve a grade 4 or above

Through your Science studies at West Suffolk College you will have gained industry relevant, practical investigative skills, that will enable you to pursue a career in health sciences  or continue onto to study  health or medical science at a higher level.

Science gives you a great opportunity to develop transferable skills such your critical thinking skills, through problem solving and designing investigations.

When developing protocols, you may not get it right first time, but have to return to the drawing board and adapt your plans before trying again, developing character strengths such as resilience too.

We give our students the opportunity to grow in confidence and ability to communicate their ideas through presentations work in house and external public engagement events throughout the year.

Assessment is mixed within the program and is internally assessed.

Where will the course take me?

You may choose from further courses at West Suffolk College, such as Level 3 Health Science, Applied Science, Level 3 Animal Care or Laboratory Technician Apprenticeships.

Other related areas they could move on into are courses in Sports Science, Health and Social Care along with Hair and Beauty.

Will I need any materials or equipment?

You will require a calculator, memory stick, notebook/line paper, pen/pencils/colored pens/highlighters and poly pockets.

Relevant books are available in the library to support your learning.

A lab coat will also be required, more information regarding these will be provided on induction
