The purpose of the Level 4 HNC in Policing to develop learners who wish to continue their education, to secure the knowledge, skill and behaviours needed to be successful in a Policing workplace. The BTEC Higher National in Policing provides a wide-ranging study of the police and is also designed for adult students who wish to pursue or advance their career in policing, by demonstrating a sound knowledge of the basic concepts of policing. The course will enable students to communicate accurately and appropriately and they will give them qualities needed for employment that requires some degree of personal responsibility. The course will help students to develop a range of transferable skills to ensure effective team working, independent initiatives, organisational competence and problem solving strategies. They will be able to demonstrate adaptable and flexible approaches to policing, show resilience under pressure and meet challenging targets.
The Level 4 Higher National Certificate provides a solid grounding in policing, which students can build on and progress to higher education qualifications such as an Honours degree in Policing or a related area.
The course is made up of 8 mandatory units taught over the course of one year:
Small-scale Research Project in Policing: This unit enables students to develop information gathering and research skills in the field of policing within an ethical context. It has a practical focus that gives students the opportunity to use a range of research methods and skills for small-scales projects using both qualitative and quantitative methods, including statistical analysis.
Criminal Law: This unit provides an understanding of the general principles of criminal law and a knowledge of some defences to criminal law offences. Students will be able to explain the statute law relating to and impacting on violence, the threat of violence on society and the law on lass or damage to property. They will be able to recognise the need for the laws relating to public order and the effect of public disorder on the community.
Police and the Criminal Justice Service: The aim of this unit is to develop students understanding of the criminal justice system in England and Wales to evaluate its effectiveness. Students will cover how the criminal justice system operates and how defendant are dealt with by the system, also looking at the ethical issues involved with sentencing and punishment.
Equality and Diversity in Police Service: This unit aims to identify the importance of equality and diversity in the police service and the leadership the police service must show to promote it. It enables students to evaluate legislative provision for the protection of individual against discrimination and the different procedures open to victims of unfair treatment. Understanding why discrimination has no place within the police services.
Roads Policing: This unit will introduce students to the principles of road policing. Students will study the construction and use regulations, drink and drug driving, and how to apply this legislation. Road traffic collisions will be reviewed and the anti-social use of vehicles in the wider community. They will also look at community safety and crime reduction, with a research task addressing anti-social behaviour.
Technology and the Police Service: The aim of this unit is to develop students' knowledge of how technology can support police service delivery and the benefits of using technology for the police service and the community. Effective use of technology is at the heart of the operation of the police service in the 21st century.
Criminology - Practical Application for the Police Service: This unit gives the students the opportunity to study criminology, the theories around it and how it relates to police work. Students will be encouraged to apply the theories they have studied in policing situations and be able to resolve them using different methods. The students will research different crimes of violence, and the possible reasons behind why these crimes are committed.
Command and Control: The focus of this unit is on the skills and abilities required for the command of incidents and the control of any police staff, from planned operation to events, to dynamic and spontaneous incidents. The roles of Gold, Silver and Bronze command will be explored in any given scenario and how this structure is deployed, this will incorporate decision making and problem solving.
On completion of the course students could then apply to become Police Officer, Police Community Support Officer, a Special Constable or work as Police Staff in a civilian capacity.
A NCFE/BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Uniformed Public Services or other Level 3 diploma or two 'A' levels
GCSE's in English and maths grade A* to C or 9 to 4 (or equivalent)
