About the course

This study programme is designed for our aged 19+ adult learners.

Please visit our 16-18 section for alternative courses.

This integrative Counselling Course focuses on both theoretical and experiential learning. The main theories studied are Person Centered, Freudian, Jungian, Developmental approaches. This compliments the experiential learning aspect of the course which consists of practical counselling skills work and an experiential group to develop self-awareness. You will also be required to take part in a 15 week counselling exercise as the client of a degree level student.


There are two Saturday morning workshops led by guest speakers and a weekend residential where students take part in an experiential group for which there is a cost to students. More information will be given at interview stage.

Students are required to adhere to the BACP ethical framework. As a professional course, students' dress and appearance should be of a professional standard.

Entry requirements

Applicants will be required to supply a current basic disclosure form within the first six weeks of the course and 2 references, one from an employer and one character reference should be supplied to the Course Director at the time of interview. The character reference must be someone who has known you for at least 2 years, who is a professional qualified person (i.e. doctor, MP, Police officer, lawyer, sponsor etc.) and is not a family member or under 18 years of age.


All applicants will be sent an assignment which they will need to bring to the interview. A reasonable level of maturity and life experience is required. Applicants should have English GCSE grade A-C or equivalent. Candidates will also need to be able to organise written information clearly and coherently. Applicants should not be in therapy at the point of interview.


West Suffolk College runs 10 week Introduction to Counselling Courses three times a year. This course is ideal for those wishing to discover if the Counselling profession is right for them before committing to the Access Counselling courses or the BA in Integrative Counselling (subject to meeting entry requirements).


Applicants must be aged 21 or over as at 31 August to be eligible for this course and / or a reasonable level of maturity.


Applicants will be invited to a group and individual interviews where they can find out more about the course from the tutors and discuss whether this is the course for them.




Successful candidates will be awarded a diploma by the Cambridge Access Validating Agency.

What you'll learn (core modules)

The course consists of experiential group work, skills work and psychotherapeutic theory.

Where will this course take me?

Higher Education BA (Hons) Integrative Counselling or move on to other courses through the Credit Accumulation Scheme. All students who wish to go on to practise as professional counsellors are strongly advised to work towards individual accreditation with the BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) or another recognised accrediting organisation.

How much will it cost?

The course fees are waived if the student is under 24 years of age and has not studied a full Level 3 qualification.
