About the course
This qualification is for you if you are a 16-19 year old learner, who wishes to work as an electrician in the building services industry. It has been designed to deliver a high level of occupational skills and provide a platform from which to progress through further learning or into employment. This vocational route at level 3 is a vital step towards becoming a competent electrician.
The qualification will help you gain an understanding of the skills required within the electrotechnical sector. You will cover compulsory aspects such as: working safely and effectively, design, construct, test and commission electrical systems, methods of supervision, electrical science and principles, wiring regulations and law, diagnose and repair electrical faults.
Entry requirements
Successful completion of Electrotechnical Level 2 Diploma along with a suitable reference from the course director. GCSE Maths and English are required as per Level 2
A mandatory interview is also required.

City and Guilds Advanced Technical Diploma in Electrical Installation (8202-30)
What you'll learn (core modules)
This diploma has seven mandatory units:
- Planning and overseeing electrical work activities
- Principles of electrical science
- Electrical design and installation practices and procedures
- Principles of inspection, testing and commissioning electrical systems
- Inspecting, testing and commissioning electrical systems
- Electrical system fault diagnosis and rectification
- Requirements for electrical installations

Students will develop excellent professional skills during their studies equipping them for life in the workplace. The importance of resilience and increasing confidence to work independently is strongly developed in the level 2 programme.
How will I be assessed?
Externally marked exam
The exam is externally set and externally marked, and will be Paper-based only. The exam is designed to assess the candidate's depth and breadth of understanding across content in the qualification at the end of the period of learning, using a range of question types and will be sat under invigilated examination conditions.
Candidates who fail the exam at the first sitting will have one opportunity to re-sit. If the re-sit is failed the candidate will fail the qualification.
Synoptic assignment
The synoptic assignment is externally set, internally marked and externally moderated. The assignment requires candidates to identify and use effectively in an integrated way an appropriate selection of skills, techniques, concepts, theories, and knowledge from across the content area.
Candidates will be judged against the assessment objectives.
Candidates who fail the assignment will have one re-sit opportunity. The re-sit opportunity will be in the next academic year, and will be the assignment set for that academic year once released to centres. If the re-sit is failed, the candidate will fail the qualification
Where is the course delivered? (facilities/classrooms)
West Suffolk College will be your base for the classroom delivery, 3 days per week.
You will also spend two days per week out in placement during the year.
