About the course

This course will be a practical L1 Diploma in Performance, Music and Media and will use the creative approach of the UAL awarding body to keep the teaching very similar to the self-directed, experimental, experiential learning that many Home Educated learners will be used to.
Exploring Performing arts, Music (performance and technology), and Media production (filming and editing) this course will use a range of lessons and techniques to introduce learners to further education and employment opportunities within the creative industries.

Entry requirements

Entry is by interview (informal). Candidates will be 14-16 and from EHE background. Applicants will also need to be studying Maths and English with a view to completion of GCSE examinations.  Applicants will need to be able to be motivated, manage their own time and have an enthusiastic approach to learning.

Qualifications

Successful students will achieve the Level 1 UAL Award and Diploma in Performance, music and media.

What you'll learn (core modules)

Combining Performing arts, Music (performance and technology), and Media production (filming and editing) this course will give the students a clearer understanding of these subjects and help them decide which path they might choose to follow as they progress to Level 2 and Level 3. This course will also provide an early opportunity for EHE learners to experience Further Education in preparation for progressing to university and/or employment.
The main aim of this course is to give learners the opportunity to gain a qualification while having fun and learning the core elements of the three main subjects covered. This will be achieved by using a lot of group collaborative work which will be student led as much as possible, encouraging their creativity and confidence and their respect for peers and staff.
Each unit of study will develop skills in performance and production, be it playing music or recording it, acting a play or lighting it, writing a short film or filming and editing it, all learners will be given the opportunity to steer their contribution to the units to best suit their own path of interest. As the UAL courses are not rote learning based, each learner will be producing their own independent work and will be encouraged to analyse and reflect on their own performance to identify their strengths and areas for improvement; this emulates the teaching and learning on L2 and L3 courses and even into Higher Education at university level. Alongside the main program Maths and English GCSE/FS is offered.

We have a culture of outstanding standards. All courses require resilience, determination to succeed and professional conduct. Full attendance and meeting assignment deadlines is critical to success. We are preparing individuals for further education and integration into adult environments; building character strengths and ambition underpins everything we do.

How will I be assessed?

There are no 'exams' for our main program. Assessment is primarily through coursework comprising of performance, presentations, short filmed productions, audio content, essays and written reports. 1-1 recorded feedback and targets are given at key milestones. All work is assessed and verified internally. The Final Major Project in term 3 is moderated externally. Final qualifications are awarded at either a Pass, Merit or Distinction level. L1 Award will be completed within the first term and L1 diploma over the second and final terms.

Where is the course delivered? (facilities/classrooms)

West Suffolk College Main Campus. Lessons are within specialist theatre, music and media studio environments and many workshops will include the use of Apple iMac suites using the latest Adobe Production Suites and relative Industry standard Software.

Where will this course take me?

Students on this course will have the opportunity to progress onto our subject specific Level 2 (or Level 3 depending on individual circumstances) courses of study where they can continue to explore their chosen specialities onto university degree courses and into employment. The UAL Level 3 qualifications all carry the same UCAS points as equivalent A-levels. We have an outstanding track record of our students having amazing careers and fulfilling their dreams.
