Our Painting and Decorating courses are ideal for students who want to become skilled craftspeople and to train for a career in decorating.
Painting and Decorating is one of the most rewarding trades to join and our facilities at West Suffolk College will enable you to gain all the knowledge required for a great start in this industry. Our courses will provide you with the skills to transform rooms from shabby environments into the dream homes we all want to live in.
Progression to Painting and Decorating will develop your skills in:
- Preparing and applying a range of paints
- Wallpapering
- Stencilling
- Broken colour effects

Working in Painting and Decorating can lead to a range of different and challenging working environments; you only need to consider the variety of property in Suffolk and the surrounding areas, from residential housing to historical and protected buildings, to realise how valuable a detailed knowledge of this trade can be.
Whether you want to become a skilled Painter and Decorator or you want to branch out into set design or shop fitting, our courses will help you achieve your goals.
Both full time and apprenticeship roles are available.
Entry requirements
Two GCSE's Grade E (2) or above. It is expected in the first instance that the applicant will have a genuine interest in the construction industry and each applicant will be required to attend an interview to ascertain his/her suitability for the course as well as take a short aptitude test.

What you'll learn (core modules)
Health and Safety, Working in Construction, Working as a Team, Career Planning, Positive Attitudes, Preparing Surfaces for Decorating, Painting Skills, Applying Paint Systems by Brush or by Roller, Wallpapering Skills, Decorative Effects.
Any student aged 16 to 19 who does not hold a GCSE A* to C (9 to 4 on the new grading structure) or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English by age 16 will need to continue to study these subjects in each academic year.
Where will the course take me?
On completion of the course, learners will be able to continue their studies onto the Level 2 Decorating Diploma, or the NVQ Level 2 programme if they have gained employment.
Of the students who completed this course last year 10% entered Further Education, 71% continued with their existing programme of study and 19% secured employment.
Will I need any materials or equipment?
TMC branded uniform, Safety boots, bib & brace overalls, course text book & drawing set. A basic toolkit (list given at interview)
How much will it cost?
The course is free for those under 19 years of age.
