About the course

This qualification has been designed to provide you with a strong platform for employment within the live music industry. The course is ideal for anyone starting out in the industry or looking to take a gap year before continuing their studies at university. The course will enable you to develop the professional skills, work experience and networking opportunities appropriate for a career in live sound, stage design and management, lighting and events management.

Entry requirements

Level 3 vocational qualification with a minimum of a Merit grade / 3 A-levels. We will review applications from anyone who has prior experience within any area of the live events industry, but does not have a level 3 qualification. Evidence of prior experience should be brought with applicants during the interview stage.

You will complete the course with a UAL 'Level 4 Professional Diploma in Technical & Production Practice for the Creative Industries' qualification.

Any student aged 16 to 19 who does not hold a GCSE A* to C (9 to 4 on the new grading structure) or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English by age 16 will need to continue to study these subjects in each academic year.

What you'll learn (core modules)

The course will focus on the development of professional live sound, lighting and events management techniques; being underpinned by freelancing and industry experience. Learners will be given challenging projects to work towards, encompassing different venues and opportunities to ensure they develop as rounded and versatile employees. Learners will be encouraged to develop their own interests further through a final project, based upon a pathway of their choosing. Learners will be expected to undertake a substantial amount of work experience, to support their career and skills development.

The course will include the following sessions:

  • Equipment maintenance workshop
  • Advanced live sound and lighting production
  • Freelancing and music industry awareness
  • Contextual study
  • Research skills
  • Events management

Where will the course take me?

Learners should have developed sufficient experience and industry contacts throughout the year to be able to gain employment on completion of the course. However, there are a number of options to study the subject further at university. The course also offers a pathway straight on to year two of the BA (Hons) Creative and Commercial Music course, which is delivered on site (subject to a short bridging ).

Will I need any materials or equipment?

Steel toe-capped rigger boots, rigger gloves, torch and hearing protection are all required. In addition, learners will be asked to purchase a crew t-shirt at a cost of approximately £15. Learners will be expected to undertake considerable work experience as part of the course, and will therefore need to factor in access to transport to various venue within the area.
