Advice & Help Centre

About the course

This qualification has been designed to provide you with a strong platform for employability within the live performance industry, whether that is as an artist, session musician,  teacher or performing as part of a function band - there are many employment opportunities out there which we will explore throughout the course. The course is also ideal for anyone starting out in the music industry or looking to take a gap year before continuing their studies at university.

The course will enable you to develop professional skills, work experience and networking opportunities, through a focus on high quality musicianship and performance etiquette.

If you are serious about a career in music, and cannot imagine doing anything else with your life, then this is the course for you.

Entry requirements

Level 3 vocational qualification with a minimum of a Merit grade / 3 A-levels A*-C. Applicants will be interviewed and will undergo a formal audition prior to a place being offered.

Qualifications

You will complete the course with a UAL 'Level 4 Professional Diploma in Performance' qualification. If you do not have a grade C / 4 in Maths or English prior to the course commencing, you will be required to study these subjects in addition to the main qualification.

What you'll learn (core modules)

The course will focus on the development of professional rehearsal and performance techniques; being underpinned by music theory and industry expectations. Learners will be given challenging projects to work towards, encompassing different contexts and genres to ensure they develop as rounded and versatile musicians. Learners will be encouraged to develop their own artistic identity and will explore this through a large scale final performance project. In addition, the course will focus on employment, covering key business and marketing tools for working musicians.

The course will include the following sessions:

  • Live performance workshops
  • Music Theory
  • Freelancing and Music Industry Awareness
  • Contextual studies
  • Research skills
  • Studio Session Skills

Throughout the year there will be a number of industry showcases, which will involve you performing to a panel of industry professionals. This will provide you with excellent networking opportunities and valuable feedback on your skills as a musician.

How will I be assessed?

Your final grade for this course will be PASS, MERIT or DISTINCTION.

You will generate a portfolio of evidence to support a range of performance situations, such as live performances in different settings (solo, group, themed), studio session skills, industry and mock showcase panels.

The final grade for the course is based upon a final project, that will involve considerable research and practical work. This could be a large scale recording project, a tour, a professional showcase/recital or a themed music event - the options for a final project will be discussed throughout the year.

Where will the course take me?

Learners may progress on to further courses at Higher Level, or gain employment within the industry. We offer guidance on all the available options throughout the course.

Will I need any materials or equipment?

Learners will be required to provide their own instrument and accessories, and purchase ABRSM music theory books to support the course. There will be numerous performance opportunities that will require access to transport.
