About the course



A vocational programme which provides students with an introduction to the film and television. Basic aspects of video and audio production, animation techniques and understanding the creative media sector are all covered to give learners an understanding and foundation from which to plan their future careers. Students will work on several exciting projects which will incorporate all the skills they need in order to gain practical application and a realistic experience of the film and television industry. This gives learners real experience in the media industry to develop their skills ready for a Level 3 course.

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at Grades D or above, including maths or English at Grade D (3). Alternatively relevant evidence of work experience will be taken into account. Applicants must have an active interest in Media Production and will be asked to complete a project prior to starting the course. Completion of this project is part of the entry requirements.

The College offers a range of Level 2 Diplomas. We will work with all students in their first six weeks at College to place them on the appropriate Diploma programme that best meets their individual needs and best ensures their success. After the successful completion of this, will allow them to progress on to the Level 3 Media & Film Diploma or Level 3 Broadcast and Journalism Diploma which is equivalent to five GCSEs.



What you'll learn (core modules)

Students have access to high-end Apple Mac edit suites, High Definition cameras and many other production resources. Students will be taught by experienced tutors and will have the opportunity to develop their own productions throughout the year. There are opportunities for related enrichment trips. Topics covered range from editing techniques, camera techniques, Website Design, Audio techniques and Music Video. Students will be taught how to analyse films from both a structural and visual point of view carrying out research to ensure they understand audiences. You will experiment with techniques and equipment ensuring they can achieve the best production level possible. All of your work is uploaded to a personal website that will design and develop.

Students will be expected to attend College for three days of timetabled sessions each week including regular evening session for film screening nights and other aspects of the 'Season'.


Any student aged 16 to 19 who does not hold a GCSE A* to C (9 to 4 on the new grading structure) or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English by age 16 will need to continue to study these subjects in each academic year.




Where will the course take me?

The course provides an excellent starting point for those wishing to go forward and study on the Extended Diploma Level 3 in Media or Broadcast  - subject to attendance and attitude. Students can progress eventually to gain entry to employment or go on to some of the country's most prestigious universities that specialise in Film Production, Television Production, 2D and 3D animation. Of the students who completed the level 3 course last year 79% went onto Higher Education while 21% secured employment.

External Hard Drive (1 TB min), memory card - class 10 and headphones and a 9 Volt battery - approximate cost £200.
