This study programme is designed for 16 to 19 year olds (aged 19 to 24 for students with an Education, Health and Care Plan).

All courses take place on our Sixth Form Campus, therefore any applicants aged 25+ or over who do not have an Education, Health and Care Plan may be required to complete a DBS check as part of the conditional offer to West Suffolk College. The cost to the applicant for a DBS is £30.00 and the DBS check can be completed through the college.

This Motorsport Engineering Level 3 course is a flexible vocationally related qualification aimed at enthusiastic young people aged 16 years old and over, who wish to develop their knowledge and understanding of the requirements of an automotive technician within the motorsport, performance road cars and/or retail motor industries.

This L3 qualification is designed to provide a standardised approach for the delivery and assessment of the knowledge and skills requirements. This qualification is assessed through the use of written report-based assignments, plus completion of an electronic portfolio based on completion of practical (workshop) tasks and online exams.

This Level 3 qualification is industry specific National Occupational Standards. Learners will develop their knowledge to diagnose complex problems and repair motorsport motor vehicles including the understanding of materials, fabrication, tools and measuring, and the motorsport knowledge areas such as: event regulations; setting up motorsport vehicles; inspecting a motorsport vehicle during competition; diagnosis and rectification of engine and ancillary components; diagnosis and rectification of transmission and driveline faults; diagnosis and rectification of chassis system faults. Current students are engaged in the construction of an Arion S2 racing car.

The qualification prepares learners to further develop their knowledge and skills across a variety of specialist areas to prepare them for further studies and potentially enter into a job role they desire.

Students will practice working effectively and safely. In addition to applying the practical skills developed the course also works to improve your employability, communication, numeracy and IT abilities. Work experience is a key course element.

  • Diagnosis and rectification of electrical/electronic equipment faults
  • Constructing, installing and testing cable forms and looms
  • Installing, setting up and testing electrical/electronic engine/transmission control units
  • Stripping and rebuilding engines for motorsport vehicles
  • Dressing engines for motorsport vehicles
  • Motorsport Transmission Technology
  • General Aspects e.g. health and safety, legal aspects and organisational requirements
  • Engineering processes (e.g., tool manufacture & technical drawing)

Entry requirements

Successful completion of the Level 2 Automotive Engineering course plus Grade 4 English and Grade 4 Mathematics

Please note: you will be required to complete a successful interview (including aptitude test).

Subject to successful interview and completion of this course, you may progress to Higher Education study (e.g., HNC/D). Completion of this course of study and further courses can provide a platform for a Motorsport (or other Automotive related) apprenticeship or employment within a related technology sector. Note: the emphasis on work-experience is intended to provide the network of contacts to link to onward employment.
