About the course

On this course, you will develop the skills required to carry out routine services and repairs of light vehicles including removing and replacing engine parts, auxillary electrical components, and chassis units as well as learning how to conduct pre and post work inspections.

Entry requirements

The Level 2 Diploma preferably requires Grade C (Level 4) in English and Maths. The minimum entry criteria is three level 3 grade GCSEs (or grade D) in English, Maths and Science.  Further assessments may be carried out to assess course suitability.

Progressing students will also need to enrol as a new student, they will also be subject to an interview and further diagnostic assessment at enrolment.

Qualifications

Vehicle Maintenance VRQ Level 2.

What you'll learn (core modules)

This L2 qualification is designed to provide a standardised approach for the delivery and assessment of the knowledge and skills requirements. It also provides the knowledge requirements for its related VCQ and forms the knowledge component of the IMI SSC Maintenance and Repair Apprenticeship framework (for Light Vehicle).

 

This qualification is broken down into the following five sections:

  • Chassis Technology
  • Engine Technology
  • Electrical & Electronic Technology
  • Transmission Technology
  • General Aspects e.g. health and safety, legal aspects and organisational requirements.

There is the requirement for these units to be assessed through the use of phase tests throughout the year.

The assessment of this VRQ is made up of 2 components:

a. IMI Awards set Practical Tasks

b. IMI Awards set Online Testing

 

Any student aged 16 to 19 who does not hold a GCSE A* to C (9 to 4 on the new grading structure) or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English by age 16 will need to continue to study these subjects in each academic year.

Where will the course take me?

Successful completion of this course could lead to an Apprenticeship, or entry onto the Level 3 Advanced Automotive Engineering full time course.

 

Of the students who completed this course last year 36% entered Further Education, 72% continued with their existing programme of study and 20% secured employment.

Will I need any materials or equipment?

There will be a requirement to pay a small fixed cost for books, boots and overalls that will be discussed at the interview stage.
