About the course
Creativity at the root of everything you do? The urge to express and explore yourself at the core of who you are? Film and TV are one of the most exciting industries to get into. Throughout the course you will develop skills in script-writing, production planning, camera operation, lighting, directing, VFX and sound. To impress anyone, you're going to need some proof of your dazzling talent. You're going to need a showreel. So, what are you waiting for? Our courses offer students insights into the film and television industry and give real life work experience through our in-house production studio, taking on project briefs from external clients working alongside our industry trained staff.
Entry requirements
Five GCSEs Grade 4 or above, including maths or English at Grade 3 or 4
We will invite you in for an interview, where we will discuss your prior experience and aspirations. You will be asked to complete a Summer project, which will form part of the conditions of your place on the course - we set this during enrolment in June/July.
We expect a minimum of 95% attendance and full engagement in every lesson and will regularly be reviewing your progress to ensure this is the right course for you.
Any student aged 16 to 19 who does not hold a GCSE 9 to 4 in maths and English will need to continue to study these subjects alongside the main course.
Qualifications
You will complete this course with an industry recognised UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production and Technology (equivalent to 3 A Levels at A* for a distinction overall). Year one is graded as a Level 3 Diploma and year two as an Extended Diploma.
What you'll learn (core modules)
Topics covered range from editing & audio techniques, camera techniques, 2D animation, 48 Hour Film Challenge, interview techniques, music video production, advertising, writing for television and film and VFX.
Benefits, skills and character strengths
In year two, you take part in our '48 hour film challenge', which requires you to work in a production team to write, produce and edit a short film. This is screened at an awards ceremony.
Throughout the course yo will be working with industry professionals, and work on commissions for companies in the local area. These opportunities provide you with outstanding work experience, networking skills and the confidence to go out and make a career for yourself.
How will I be assessed?
Throughout the course you will generate a portfolio of evidence to show how you are developing within the media and film industries. You will be producing both practical work in addition to presentations, mood boards, evaluations and research documentation.
We make our assignments industry focussed and relevant - we don't ask you to do anything which doesn't develop the necessary skills to be successful within the industry.
Your grade for year one and year two is based upon a large project of your choosing. You work on this at the end of each year, and so long as it fits within the boundaries of the qualification, this could anything from producing a music video to making a short film.
Where will the course take me?
We offer an HNC in Media Production, which builds up on the skills learnt on Level 3, but focus on working on a short commercial film, supported by industry professionals. Many learners from this course gain entry to employment or go on to some of the country's most prestigious universities that specialise in Film Production, Television Production, 2D Animation and VFX Compositing.
Of the students who completed this course last year 79% went onto Higher Education while 21% secured employment.
