About the course

A day time and evening option is available for this course. The day time option will run Thursdays - 09.15 : 16.30 The evening option will run Tuesday & Thursday - 18.00 : 21.00

Get the skills needed to become a financial team leader or set up your own practice with this course. You'll cover financial statements for limited companies and complex management accounting tasks and you can really hone your skills through our specialist taxation modules (Business and Personal). Once you have passed, you will automatically become an AAT affiliate member, and if you have relevant work experience you can qualify for AAT full professional membership.

Entry requirements

Unlike other qualifications there are no entry requirements with AAT and you don't need relevant work experience. This means that this course is ideal if you are leaving school, returning to work or thinking about a change in career. Useful strengths include confidence with numbers, time management, attention to detail and an ability to problem solve.

Qualifications

AAT Professional Diploma in Accounting (Level 4), awarded in conjunction with the Association of Accounting Technicians.

What you'll learn (core modules)

The course covers 6 modules over the year -

"Financial Statements of Limited Companies" will develop your knowledge to understand regulatory and conceptual frameworks which underpin the preparation of accounts for limited companies. You will be able to understand and apply International Financial Reporting Standards and prepare consolidated financial statements.

"Management Accounting: Budgeting" recognises the importance of budgetary control and its use as an essential tool for planning, coordinating, authorising and cost control.

"Management Accounting: Decision and Control" you will learn to calculate and measure business performance, analysing information from financial statements and be able to make suggestions for improving performance via preparation of performance reports.

"Accounting Systems and Controls" will be assessed in the synoptic assessment only and will aim pull together all of your accounting knowledge and show your ability to review accounting systems and their appropriateness to a chosen organisation, including the internal controls in place.

"Personal tax" and "Business Tax" modules cover key taxes payable by individuals, namely income tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax, with the business tax module covering key taxes payable by sole traders, partnerships and limited companies, namely income tax, national insurance, capital gains tax and corporation tax.

The taxation modules are assessed individually, and not within the synoptic assessment. Any student aged 16 to 19 who does not hold a GCSE A* to C or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English by age 16 will need to continue to study these subjects in each academic year.

How will I be assessed?

Students must successfully complete the three mandatory unit assessments and one synoptic assessment plus unit assessments for two optional units to achieve this qualification. All assessments are computer based, time limited and are set and marked by the AAT. The assessments will take place at our Bury St Edmunds campus. To achieve the qualification and be awarded a grade, a student must pass all the mandatory unit assessments, all the required optional unit assessments and the synoptic assessment.

Predominantly in classrooms with access to PCs at our Bury St Edmunds campus.
