Advice & Help Centre

About the course

This is a condensed GCSE, with the syllabus to be studied over 6 months working towards the exams in the summer of 2022. There will also be an element of guided self-study in this course.

Each individual will be fully assessed by our professional tutors and advised whether this qualification would best suit his/her needs. Students may be directed to the longer GCSE course which will start in September 2022 if the tutor feels this is more appropriate.

Students often find attending a functional skills class beneficial, prior to starting GCSE.

If English is not your first language, we will ask you to do an initial ESOL assessment. We offer a range of ESOL classes which may suit your needs better than a GCSE.

Entry requirements

You will need to have either a Functional skills Level 2 Maths qualification or achieve the minimum standard required during the assessment to be accepted onto the course.

Qualifications

GCSE Maths (AQA) new specification grades 1-5. Students will be working towards the foundation paper: the highest grade is 5 which is roughly equivalent to grade B.

What you'll learn (core modules)

The tutor will prepare learners for exam entry for GCSE which is completed in June 2022. The course consists of the use of scientific calculators and will start with a thorough grounding in the basics of maths to clear up any misconceptions. Despite the intensive nature of the course there should be time to introduce everyone to the fun of maths. This is a condensed course which can be very demanding but very rewarding. All sessions are taught with plenty of opportunities to ask questions. 9 core subjects that are threaded through the course are: Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction, Fractions, Decimals, Percentages, Ratio and Proportion, Scales and conversions. The new specification GCSE Maths contains a third extra content on previous years. In order to be successful students will be expected to attend a 3 hour lesson each week and spend at least the same amount of time in home studies.
