Qualifications

AAT Advanced Diploma in Accounting (Level 3) awarded in conjunction with the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT)

What you'll learn (core modules)

The course covers 6 modules over the year:

"Advanced Bookkeeping" will help you develop your book keeping and double entry skills, learning how accountants make yearend adjustments to an initial draft trial balance. You will learn about accruals and prepayments, fixed asset registers, depreciation, bad and doubtful debts etc.

"Final Accounts Preparation" will focus on Sole Traders and Partnerships and will take your knowledge of book keeping and help you to prepare accounts for these types of business ownerships from a final trial balance. In partnership accounts you will learn about the adjustments required for partners joining, retiring, changing profit share ratios etc.

"Management Accounting: Costing" will take your appreciation of costs that make up a product, determine its selling price and show you how businesses use different costing methods across manufacturing, retail and service industries. You will learn about short term decision making using a determined breakeven point and long term decision making using discounted cash flows.

"Indirect Tax" will help you understand about VAT, what a business can and can't claim for, penalties and implications of non submission of VAT returns, and how to complete a VAT return.

All of the above modules will be assessed individually via a computer based exam. Further to this you will study the following two modules, which will not be assessed as separate modules, but instead assessment for these will be within the Level 3 synoptic exam. "Spreadsheets for Accounting" - you will gain an understanding of how to use Excel to an intermediate level, taking data and confidently being able to get the system to generate you answers based on "what if" scenarios, conditional formatting based on criteria that you require, and the lookup of particular information in a minefield of data etc. "Ethics for Accountants" will be about the 5 codes of practice that all accountants must follow, namely confidentiality, integrity, professional behaviour, professional competence, and objectivity.

"Synoptic" - a computer based assessment introduced in the new AQ2016 syllabus which pulls together the knowledge learnt from Advanced Bookkeeping, Final Accounts Preparation, Management Accounting, Ethics for Accountants, and Spreadsheets for Accounting. This module will be the final assessment undertaken, to complete your level 3 studies. Any student aged 16 to 19 who does not hold a GCSE A* to C or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English by age 16 will need to continue to study these subjects in each academic year.

How will I be assessed?

Students must successfully complete four unit assessments and one synoptic assessment to achieve this qualification. All assessments are computer based, time limited and are set and marked by the AAT. The assessments will take place at our Bury St Edmunds campus. To achieve the qualification and be awarded a grade, a student must pass all the mandatory unit assessments and the synoptic assessment.
