We have developed new online courses and blended delivery options with the safety and well-being of our students at the heart of everything we do. We will be able to advise you of our current offer (Covid-19 restrictions allowing) once you apply for one of our courses, starting in September 2021.

Entry requirements

There are no formal requirements, but the results of initial assessments will be taken into account when deciding on the level for which you will be entered.

Functional Skills Maths (Edexcel) Entry Level, Levels 1 and 2.

Our classes are small, friendly groups of like-minded people and our experienced tutors are keen to help you do as much as you feel possible. We are there to help you succeed!

You can take different levels of qualification from entry level to Level 1 or Level 2 and GCSE. We plan to offer classes that will run daytime or evenings at centres throughout Norfolk and Suffolk, therefore you can choose which course best suits your needs. We will also be able to offer online courses that will ensure you can continue to study from the comfort of your own home.

What you'll learn (core modules)

This course will also provide you with maths skills in preparation for progressing to GCSE, university and/or employment.

You will be part of a small, friendly classroom and will focus on building everyday practical skills such as problem solving, handling information and data, calculating ratios, averages and areas of shapes and space, working towards the reformed qualification in Functional Skills mathematics.

The qualification comprises one assessment of two sections: non-calculator and calculator.

How will I be assessed?

The Functional Skills qualification consists of one externally assessed assessment, comprising two separate sections a non-calculator section (calculator prohibited) and a calculator section (calculator permitted).

There will be the opportunity to sit mock exams, in preparation, and your tutor will provide written and verbal feedback.

Where is the course delivered? (facilities/classrooms)

This class is planned to take place face to face in the classroom at West Suffolk College in Haverhill. We will take into account social distancing when planning class sizes.*

*We will return to classroom based teaching across our centres in September – Covid-19 restrictions allowing.

We will also plan to offer some of our courses online too. Online classes will be delivered using Microsoft TEAMS and alongside the same great standard of teaching, students will also have regular one to one sessions with the tutor to ensure everyone is given the support they need. Feedback from existing students is that they have enjoyed the experience and the exam pass rate has been excellent.

Further details and options will be provided once you submit an enquiry about our courses.

Where will this course take me?

Functional Skills qualifications for Levels 1 and 2 are progression routes towards the GCSE. When a qualification is successfully achieved you will have the option to progress onto a higher-level Functional Skill or a GCSE.

How much will it cost?

If you have lived within the EU for the previous 3 years and do not already have a GCSE grade C or above in this subject then you qualify for full course funding.

I'm interested. What should I do now?

Once you apply online, your centre team will send you all the information you need to enrol and get set up on your course, whether this is remotely or face to face.

You will undertake online Initial and Diagnostic Assessments to assess the most appropriate level of study. It is vital that you complete this assessment on your own and to the best of your ability.

Your centre team will contact you once this is completed, and talk you through your results, the level that has been set and your prior achievement. You will have the opportunity to agree on the course level and your method of delivery be it online or classroom based. Your identification will be confirmed, and the enrolment process completed. However please be aware that it will be the tutor's discretion to change your level if they feel this is not right for you, once you begin your course.
