About the course
The Adult Maths & English department offers a range of high-quality teaching options to suit all expectations and lifestyles.
We are running Summers Schools across our centres to offer learners the opportunity to take a functional skills qualification in 5 days.
You will be expected to attend each of the 5 days and take your exam on day 5 of the course. As well as attending the course each day there will also be work that you will be asked to do at home. It is an intensive course but if you are willing to work hard for 5 days will be worth the reward.
Class time 9.30-4.30pm each day with a break for lunch.
Please note we hope these classes will run in all our centres but all our offers are subject to change - in order to comply with ongoing government guidance.
There are no formal requirements, but the results of initial assessments will be taken into account when deciding on the level for which you will be entered.
Functional Skills Maths (Edexcel) Levels 1 and 2
What you'll learn (core modules)
This course will also provide you with maths skills in preparation for progressing to GCSE, university and/or employment.
You will be part of a small, friendly classroom and will focus on building everyday practical skills such as problem solving, handling information and data, calculating ratios, averages and areas of shapes and space, working towards the reformed qualification in Functional Skills mathematics.
The qualification comprises one assessment of two sections – non-calculator and calculator.
How will I be assessed?
The Functional Skills qualification consists of one externally assessed assessment, comprising two separate sections – a non-calculator section (calculator prohibited) and a calculator section (calculator permitted).
There will be the opportunity to sit mock exams, in preparation, and your tutor will provide written and verbal feedback.
Where is the course delivered? (facilities/classrooms)
This class is planned to take place face to face in the classroom at University Studies Building, West Suffolk College. We will take into account social distancing when planning class sizes.
Where will this course take me?
Functional Skills qualifications for Levels 1 and 2 are progression routes towards the GCSE. When a qualification is successfully achieved you will have the option to progress onto a higher-level Functional Skill or a GCSE.
How much will it cost?
If you have lived within the EU for the previous 3 years and do not already have a GCSE grade C or above in this subject then you qualify for full course funding.
I'm interested. What should I do now?
INDUCTION & ENROLMENT
Once you apply online, your centre team will send you all the information you need to enrol and get set up on your course remotely.
You will undertake online Initial and Diagnostic Assessments to assess the most appropriate level of study. It is vital that you complete this assessment on your own and to the best of your ability.
Your centre team will contact you once this is completed, and talk you through your results and the level that has been set and your prior achievement – and you will agree the course level and your method of delivery. Identification will be confirmed and the enrolment process completed. However please be aware that it will be the tutor's discretion to change your level if they feel this is not right for you, once you begin your course.
