This study programme is designed for 16 to 19 year olds (aged 19 to 24 for students with an Education, Health and Care Plan).

All courses take place on our Sixth Form Campus, therefore any applicants aged 25+ or over who do not have an Education, Health and Care Plan may be required to complete a DBS check as part of the conditional offer to West Suffolk College. The cost to the applicant for a DBS is £30.00 and the DBS check can be completed through the college.

About the course

This is a one year intensive programme of study designed to develop the skills required for students who would like a career within the make-up industry, such as fashion and media, photographic and film or to progress onto the Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma Media Makeup Artistry.

 

This is a practically-based fast paced, creative programme, you will need to be highly motivated and be able to work positively as a member of a team and independently, working to a high professional standard. Each student will be responsible for compiling their own portfolio of evidence, which will include all theory, projects and practical assessments. Students will be required to complete work related experience within the industry to enrich their programme of study and gain relevant employability skills.

Students will also develop Functional Skills in English and Mathematics. The course offers a range of enrichment activities throughout the year and students are expected to take part in West Suffolk College and national competitions.

Entry requirements

At least two GCSE passes at Grade A*-C (9-4)) (to include English and Mathematics)  is required to gain entry onto this course. However, this course does offer flexibility on the outcome of a personal interview and selection process with the curriculum staff, high grades in creative subjects are desirable.

Qualifications

Level 2 Technical Certificate in Make-up Artistry.

What you'll learn (core modules)

This course is designed to give students a good foundation in hair and media make-up. The programme will develop skills in: Media make-up skills to a level 2 standard to include, application of make-up and photographic make-up. Working in the make up industry, anatomy and physiology, research and development and showcase designs. The art of applying make up, hair artistry, creative make-up artistry.

Students are also required to attend a work skills programme covering personal and social development a directed study and employability session.

Any student aged 16 to 19 who does not hold a GCSE A* to C (9 to 4 on the new grading structure) or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English by age 16 will need to continue to study these subjects in each academic year.

How will I be assessed?

This course has an end point practical assessment, similar to a trade test, this covers practical skills and behaviours of the professional make up artist, this happens at the start of the third term. There will also be an end of course exam at the end of the second term, this covers theory taught across all units of make up artistry. All elements must be completed and achieved in order to achieve a full qualification. you will be expected to sourse your own models for practice and exams.

Where will the course take me?

On successful completion of the Level 2 Hair and Media Make-up programme, students can progress on to a Level 3 Media Makeup and Hair programme. It will also provide you with an introduction to the principles and practical skills required to pursue a career working as an assistant to a make-up artist.

Will I need any materials or equipment?

Upon enrolment for this course students will receive order forms that list all the equipment, tools and uniform required for the course. The kit required for this course is essential and must be ordered as soon as possible. Enrichment will be planned as additional costs courses throughout the year with some exciting opportunities. You may need to consider additional costs for recommended text books, trips and activities throughout the year.
