About the course

This GCSE course is a one year intensive course for Adults.

 

The course is fast paced, so good attendance is required to ensure you keep up with the content. It is a popular course for people looking for a career change or looking to meet the requirements to have a GCSE for further study.

 

  • Paper 1: Understanding the Modern world
  • Paper 2: Shaping the Nation 

 

This will be an evening class 6-9pm term-time only.

We would look at your English writing skills at the point of entry.

Paper 1: Understanding the modern world

 

Section A:

Period studies

One of the following areas will be taught (please enquire for more information as to which topic areas will be covered):

  • America, 1840-1895: Expansion and consolidation
  • Germany, 1890-1945: Democracy and dictatorship
  • Russia, 1894-1945: Tsardom and communism
  • America, 1920-1973: Opportunity and inequality

 

Section B:

Wider world depth studies

One of the following areas will be taught (please enquire for more information as to which topic areas will be covered):

  • Conflict and tension: The First World War, 1894-1918
  • Conflict and tension: The inter-war years, 1918-1939
  • Conflict and tension between East and West, 1945-1972
  • Conflict and tension in Asia, 1950-1975
  • Conflict and tension in the Gulf and Afghanistan, 1990-2009

 

Paper 2: Shaping the nation

 

Section A:

Thematic studies

One of the following areas will be taught (please enquire for more information as to which topic areas will be covered):

  • Britain: Health and the people: c1000 to the present day
  • Britain: Power and the people: c1170 to the present day
  • Britain: Migration, empires and the people: c790 to the present day

 

Section B:

British depth studies including the historic environment

 

One of the following areas will be taught (please enquire for more information as to which topic areas will be covered):

  • Norman England, c1066-c1100
  • Medieval England: The reign of Edward I, 1272-1307
  • Elizabethan England, c1568-1603
  • Restoration England, 1660-1685

How will I be assessed?

Paper 1:

2 hours written exam 50% of GCSE

 

Paper 2:

2 hours written exam 50% of GCSE

 

Exams will take place at the university studies and professional development building in Bury St Edmunds in June 2024.

Where is the course delivered? (facilities/classrooms)

Lessons are planned to take place at West Suffolk College in Thetford.

How much will it cost?

This course is fully funded if you are unemployed or on an annual income of less than £20,319.  Otherwise the course will be part funded with a total cost to you of £395 which includes cost of learning, resources and examinations.
