About the course
There are 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK today, with this number expected to rise to over one million by 2025.
The Level 3 Certificate in Understanding the Principles of Dementia Care enables learners to develop knowledge and understanding of caring for individuals with dementia.
This course allows learners to develop in-depth knowledge and understanding of dementia and its effects. Learners will gain an understanding of the types of dementia, the importance of early diagnosis and the role of communication, interaction and inclusion in dementia care and support.
Learners must meet the following eligibility criteria to access this course:
- *Age: Learners must have been at least 19 years of age by 1 August 2021 (if you are aged 19-23 years you must already hold a full level 2 qualification i.e. 5 x GCSE's grade A*-C / 4-9)
- Nationality: Learners must have lived within the EU for at least the last 3 years
- Learners will be required to complete an electronic enrolment form.
- Learners will be required to complete a student declaraton.
- Learners must undertake a maths and English skills checker. (initial online course only)
- Learners will be required to attend an online induction session via zoom.(initial online course only)

What you'll learn (core modules)
Unit 1: Understanding dementia
This unit will introduce you to the most common types of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. You will study the causes, effects and risk factors of dementia and gain an understanding of the importance of early diagnosis.
Unit 2: Understand how person-centred approaches are used to underpin the care and support of individuals with dementia
Throughout this unit you will gain an understanding of the importance of person-centred care for individuals with dementia. You will consider how each individual's experience of dementia is different and how they can be supported.
Unit 3: Principles of communication and interaction in dementia care and support
This unit will introduce you to various ways in which individuals with dementia may communicate. You will discover the factors that could influence interactions and communication, and develop your understanding of how communication is an effective part of caring for and supporting individuals with dementia.
Unit 4: Supporting positive interaction, occupation and activity in dementia care
This unit will enhance your understanding of the range and benefits of positive interactions in dementia care. You will discover the importance of promoting identity and inclusion and will also investigate how individuals with dementia can engage in activities.
Unit 5: Principles of equality, diversity and inclusion in dementia care and support
You will develop your understanding of the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion within the context of dementia care. This unit highlights how to recognise and challenge discrimination and oppressive practices.
Unit 6: Understand how to support individuals with dementia to exercise choice and rights
This unit will provide you with an understanding of how the rights of individuals with dementia are protected, and how to support individuals with dementia to exercise choice and make decisions involving carers and others.
Unit 7: Principles of the administration of medication and well-being of individuals with dementia
You will develop your understanding of the common medications that could be used for individuals with dementia and the actions to take in the event of side effects or adverse reactions.
How will I be assessed?
This qualification is assessed via an internally assessed portfolio of evidence which is submitted to your tutor using the online portal.
Where is the course delivered? (facilities/classrooms)
- All learning is completed online (self-study) at a time that suits you without the need to attend college.
- At the start of the course and you will be allocated a designated tutor who will support you through your qualification.

How much will it cost?
**The course is fully funded and there are no associated costs with completing this course*
However if you start and not complete this course there will be a charge of £125, to cover learners regisration fees.
