This study programme is designed for 16 to 19 year olds (aged 19 to 24 for students with an Education, Health and Care Plan).

All courses take place on our Sixth Form Campus, therefore any applicants aged 25+ or over who do not have an Education, Health and Care Plan may be required to complete a DBS check as part of the conditional offer to West Suffolk College. The cost to the applicant for a DBS is £30.00 and the DBS check can be completed through the college.

About the course

The Health and Social Care course is a substantial academic and vocational qualification, the equivalent to studying 3 A-Levels, which provides learners with the opportunity to develop knowledge, understanding and real-life skills surrounding our Health and Social care Sector. 

It is a two-year programme involving modules such as Safe practice, Nutrition, Psychology, Lifespan development, Anatomy and Physiology and Public Health. Learners will be assessed through a variety of methods; these involve both internal and external assessments which will allow learners to develop their vocational and study skills.

Entry requirements

Entry Requirements: 5 GCSEs Grade 4/5 and above including Math's AND English

Qualifications

Equivalent to 3 A-Levels after two years

What you'll learn (core modules)

Topics covered: Lifespan,  Anatomy, Care needs, Psychological practice. (2 exams per year and coursework throughout)

Work experience: Yes - 100 hours over the first years

Additionally, there is a specialised work placement for students that enable them to complete work set projects that develop workplace skills in order to prepare for vocationally based future educational programmes. This is supported by many regional health and social care providers, including care, health, and social environments as well as specialist schools.

Where can it take you?

This could progress to University, direct into work, apprentices within the NHS and much more. Learners will be supported with their progression towards higher education and future employment based within the health and social care sectors. They will be given the opportunity to gain valuable work-related training and support to develop professional practices.
