About the course

This qualification is designed to stimulate interest and encourage the learners' understanding of the skills and knowledge needed to care for young children. The course is aimed at a range of learners, including young people needing to develop life skills as well as those who are thinking of working in childcare. As well completing this course you will also be studying to achieve you English and Maths qualification as this a necessary requirement of working in an Early Years setting. The course is full time and you will be in college three days a week. This course will support learners in preparing for the 'next steps' either in training or moving towards the world of work. There will also be an opportunity for learners to do some work experience to develop the skills that they learn on the course. Further progression routes will include Children's Play Learning and Development (Early Years Assistant) Technical Diploma Level 2.

Entry requirements

The minium requirement for the course is a 3 in GCSE English.


This course will support you to achieve the NCFE CACHE Level 1 Diploma in Caring for Children.

What you'll learn (core modules)

The aim is to give learners a good understanding of the childcare sector; the values, skills and knowledge that are essential for work in this field. Learners will be studying the following modules:

  • Sharing learning experiences with children
  • Growth and development of young children
  • Children's play and leisure activities in the community
  • Preparing for your next steps
  • Supporting babies to play
  • Practical health and safety when with young children
  • Understanding learning and development through play
  • Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
  • Investigating a vocational area
  • Self-development
  • Healthy eating for families
  • Confidence building for the young child through play

Benefits, skills and character strengths

The course will help you develop character strengths such as confidence, resilience and self-control. As well as this we will also develop other character strengths and support learners to reach their full potential and ensure that we work hard to support them to achieve their goals. The course will also help students to build their curiosity about the subject.

Although the course is only 3 days a week it will give learners the opportunities to focus on their English and Maths and support learners to build a solid foundation so that they can either progress onto a Level 2 apprenticeship or join a level 2 program at the college.

The course will support learners to become more independent and take ownership of their qualifications.

How will I be assessed?

Learners will  be assessed through coursework and lecturers will support learners in class and encourage them to achieve the highest grades. 

Where is the course delivered? (facilities/classrooms)

The course will be delivered in West Suffolk College.

Where will the course take me?

The course will allow learners to progress on to other Level 2 courses. As well as this learners will also be able to apply for Level 2 apprenticeships within Early Year settings. 

Will I need any materials or equipment?

We will need our students to have their own college stationery for classes - paper, pens, a folder. These are all available for sale in the college's shop in Leonardo House.

However, for low income households learners and their parents are encouraged to apply for the bursary which will be able to support them with these costs.

How much will it cost?

This course is free for learners under the age of 19.
