Advice & Help Centre

This study programme is designed for 16 to 19 year olds (aged 19 to 24 for students with an Education, Health and Care Plan).

All courses take place on our Sixth Form Campus, therefore any applicants aged 25+ or over who do not have an Education, Health and Care Plan may be required to complete a DBS check as part of the conditional offer to West Suffolk College. The cost to the applicant for a DBS is £30.00 and the DBS check can be completed through the college.

About the course

This qualification is designed to stimulate interest and encourage the learners' understanding of the skills and knowledge needed to care for young children.

The course is aimed at a range of learners, including young people needing to develop life skills as well as those who are thinking of working in childcare.

As well completing this course you will also be studying to achieve you English and Maths qualification as this a necessary requirement of working in an Early Years setting.

The course is full time and you will be in college three days a week. This course will support learners in preparing for the 'next steps' either in training or moving towards the world of work. There will also be an opportunity for learners to do some work experience to develop the skills that they learn on the course. Further progression routes will include Level 2 Early Years Practitioner.

Entry requirements

Entry is by interview. Applicants will need a grade 3 in GCSE English.

Government mandate from November 2021 states employees will need to have maths and English at either Functional Skills level 2, or GCSE grade 4 to be employed in this sector.
