Overview of course

The aim of this course is to give those interested an introduction to analytical psychology's key concepts and to explore areas to which C.G. Jung applied his theories. Key concepts that will be encountered include the unconscious (particularly the collective unconscious), complexes, archetypes, the Self, and the psyche. Areas to which Jung applied some of his ideas other than in private therapy include society, the arts and selected historical events. This short-course will not focus exclusively on the clinical application of Jungian techniques in psychotherapy but inevitably some clinical insights will be encountered.

What will I learn?

Week 1: Jung in his historical and cultural context. Conceptual differences between Freud and Jung's models of the unconscious

Week 2: Jung, the collective unconscious and the archetypes

Week 3: Psychological typology and the self-regulating psyche. The development of personality: individuation and the Self

Week 4: Jung on the arts and religion

Week 5: Jung on science and society in modernity

Who is the course for?

This is an introductory course to key concepts in the work of C.G. Jung and in the field of Analytical Psychology. Anyone (16+) with an interest in the history of depth psychology and with clinical interests in the work of Jung might find this course of value.

Will I have to provide anything?

The course is delivered in the style of seminars, which will be mainly led by the seminar leader. There will be opportunities for questions and some discussion. Those interested may want to take notes using either a pen and paper or a tablet/laptop.
